Season 2008/09 - JONATHAN HASLAM

Engadine Dragons 14A

Jonathan had a wonderful 08/09 season. He is a strong, determined young man whose results are reflective of his natural ability, commitment to training and his attitude out in the middle. All year Jonathan was impressive, consistently piling on the runs, and this is reflected in his season tally that consists of a massive 523 runs @ 58.11. His contribution in the field was also exceptional managing 9 catches, 1 run out and 4 wickets for good measure. In a very strong 14A competition Jonathan stood up to all opposing bowling attacks and managed 2 centuries which included a majestic 167 n.o. that displayed all of Jono's talent and focus.

Jonathan has one of the best cover drives going around and can hit the ball to any part of the field. His ability to counter attack was a key to his big scores and he constantly kept piling on the runs. As well as being an outstanding batsman, Jono was impressive in the field as well. He has a great pair of hands and his ground fielding was exceptional.

To top it all off Jono is very modest and was always putting the team first. He rallied the team well in the field and time after time continued to encourage his team mates. Jono is a coach's dream and his results are just a bonus that compliments his outstanding attitude towards the game. Jono worked hard all year and continued to perform and is justly rewarded as the best performer in the 14A competition.

On behalf of the Engadine Dragons Club, congratulations Jonathan on this outstanding achievement.

Season 2008/09 - NATHAN MARCIANTE

Engadine Dragons 12A

Having watched Nathan play his cricket from an early age it gives me great pleasure to write this report for the 2008/09 Best Performed 12A cricketer.

Natural ability cannot be taught and Nathan is fortunate enough to be blessed with a ton of it, which has seen him dominate the 12A competition. Nathan holds no fears or inhibitions when it comes to playing his cricket and will attack with bat, ball and in the field to take the game away from the opposition as he did on numerous occasions this season. Nathan always plays hard but in the true spirit of the game.

The 2008/09 12A competition consisted of many well credentialed young cricketers which has made Nathan's performance that much more credible. As vice captain of the Engadine 12A team Nathan was a major contributor to his sides Premiership success and led from the front in all facets of the game. Nathan in his nine innings scored 396 runs @ 44.00 with a top score of 89. With the ball he captured 8 wickets @ 13.00 with an economy rate of 1.67 runs per over that shows how much respect his bowling was shown.

Representing the Shire in Cawsey Shield competition Nathan impressed with 129 runs @ 18.43 and captured 6 wickets @ 14.00 and, as a result of his efforts, has been selected into the 2009/10 U/13 Emerging Blues Squad.

Nathan has a special talent that no amount of coaching can instil and has a very bright future in the game.

Congratulations from all of us at Engadine Dragons on achieving this prestigious award.

Best Performance 10A

Season 2008/09 - JARROD MAZURKIEWICZ

Image Icon
Engadine Dragons 10A

The 2008/09 season saw Jarrod excel in all aspects of the game. With the bat he scored 314 runs at the exceptional average of 62.80 and with the ball he took 12 wickets at an average of 8. His fielding which included games wicket keeping was outstanding with 3 catches and 3 run outs.

This year Jarrod was given the responsibility to co-captain the Engadine Dragons team and as his statistics prove he is a leader that leads from the front and can be counted on when his team needs him. As co-captain he helped steer his team to be undefeated Minor Premiers and Premiers.

It was however Jarrod's batting that set him apart from the other players in the competition. As an opening batsman he put great value on his wicket which resulted in him "carrying" his bat on two occasions. Jarrod scored two half centuries including being retired on 50.

With the ball in his hand, Jarrod's consistent line and length allowed him to take 10 of his 12 wickets bowled.

Jarrod always saved his best performances for when he played the best teams in the competition. Over the past 2 seasons, in 6 clashes against the eventual Runners Up, Jarrod has opened on each occasion and has only been dismissed twice. He has averaged 81 with the bat and taken 11 wickets for 30 during these games. In both finals, he has topped it off by being named Man of the Match.

Jarrod's performances were rewarded with his selection in the Creak Shield team, an amazing effort considering he is still eligible next season.

Jarrod is a natural cricketer and the dedication he has shown this year will ensure further success in the years to come.

Congratulations Jarrod, on behalf of the Engadine Dragons Club, your coaches and your team mates.

Best Performance 14A

Season 2007/08 - ADAM WHATLEY

The selection of Adam Whatley as the 2007/2008 under 14 Player of the Year is a fitting reward for a gifted young cricketer. He has always displayed natural ability but during this season he has matured into a player with talent beyond his tender years. Adam dominated in his age group but also showed that he can compete with players much older.

In the 14A competition, Adam scored 467 runs at an average of 58.38. He scored three centuries. He would have scored many more runs had his coach not retired him and implemented the club policy of ensuring all members of the team batted in the lower order. Adam was happy to bat at number 11 and showed what a true team player he is.

Adam was selected in the Moore Shield team where he acquitted himself with distinction. He was picked in the Sutherland Green Shield squad and scored 95 runs in two games as an opener. He was a member of the Sutherland Grade Club Cricket Academy and won selection in the 14 years Emerging Blues squad.

Adam is a personable young man and is maturing into a committed young cricketer. He is ruthless in his determination to improve, listens to his coaches and practises tirelessly. The entire Illawong Menai Cricket community wishes him every success in the future.

Best Performance 12A

Season 2007/08 - ETHAN GRINHAM

It is quite easy to become blase when reading about the superior exploits of the best cricketers in the Sutherland Shire. After all, one has to be a capable and consistent player to be in a position to receive such an award. And so it is this year. Ethan has been written about before - he was the best player in the 10A group, and his team mates will attest to his wonderful performances this year in the 12's - as will opponents who have had to try and cope with his skills. However, this young man is one seriously gifted player, and as his manager/coach, I feel secure in predicting that if Ethan can keep focused and keep his head, we will be celebrating another Phil Jacques-like career in a few years time.

Ethan captained a St Patrick's team that won its division. His personal contribution is the sole reason why the Team celebrated their victory. The statistics speak for themselves.

During the season, the team scored a total of 1538 runs in all rounds. Ethan personally accounted for 32% (486) of these for a batting average of 54! His highest score was a sparkling 170 not out against eventual finalists Engadine.

Ethan did not bowl himself to the extent that his performances would have supported, but took a total of 13 wickets in 58 overs for 155 runs. That is a respectable average of 11.9.

Ethan showed great capability in placing attacking and defensive fields, and I am sure that as he matures, Ethan will be a good motivator of men as he gains captaincy experience. As well as having guided his St. Patrick's team to victory this year, Ethan captained the Sutherland Representative team for his age group and has richly deserved his inclusion in the Emerging Blues squad.

Best Performance 10A

Season 2007/08 - MATHEW GRIFFITHS

Mathew was outstanding for Sylvania this year taking his experience and knowledge of the game to new levels. His fantastic performances batting, bowling and in the field, inspired his team mates to play at their best.

Mathew was a solid run contributor throughout the season averaging 24.2 runs per innings. As well as runs he also was able to encourage his team mates by building partnerships each game throughout the season. These traits helped to produce his swash buckling styled century in the 3rd round resulting in Mathew's highest score and the highest innings in the 10A's across the whole competition for the season (106). In the field Mathew spent most of the time in catching positions resulting in 7 catches, some spectacular. He also inspired his team mates in the field using his high levels of concentration to seize on opportunities to save runs and complete run outs. Mathew bowled a lot of spin this season to great affect. His figures are the best of the team, with 11 wickets for 121 runs, at an average of 11. A wonderful effort.

Congratulations Mathew on a fantastic season and receiving recognition with this award. From all Sylvania and especially all your mates in the 10A's - Well done.

Best Performance 14A

Season 2006/07 - DYLAN SMITH

By way of introducing Dylan Smith, let's look to his season statistics:

  • As a number three or four batsman, Dylan compiled 521 runs, averaging 57.89, with two centuries - 148 & 117.
  • As a strike bowler, Dylan took 21 wickets at 6.52, with his best returns being 5 for 12 and 5 for 13
  • As a fielder he took 10 catches, usually in the covers region, but is proficient anywhere.

During the course of the 2006-2007 season, Dylan was also a part of:

  • Sutherland's Moore Shield (u/14) representative team
  • Sutherland's Green Shield representative team (for u/16s)
  • Sutherland Grade Club Cricket Academy
  • NSW Emerging Blues

Dylan is captain of the St Patrick's team and his leadership skills have continued to blossom to the stage where he's shown himself to be one of the most astute thinkers in the game. One of his endearing features is a willingness to learn and develop his skills. Team-mates will also verify his always positive approach and a supportive, encouraging manner that sees him spending time to help others. Dylan is passionate about the game and he combines a natural enthusiasm to always give 100%, whether at training or in a game.

In an absolutely crackerjack team, Dylan Smith had an exceptional season and leaves the 14A competition after two seasons in which he's compiled 942 runs averaging 52.33 and has taken 40 wickets at an average of 7.12. He also took 20 catches.

He is a fine young man and a talented sportsman. From all of us at St Patrick's, congratulations Dylan upon receiving such a prestigious award for the second consecutive year.

John Chesher

Best Performance 12A

Season 2006/07 - LIAM HAMLING

Liam is in his 5th year already with St John Bosco having started in U8's and has shown himself to be a true club person. We don't have many players who will play 10 years of junior cricket with the one club as Liam will most likely do. His cricket has come a long way since he first started as an U8 those many years ago. He has a passion for the game working very hard at training on all aspects of cricket. He has the ability to bowl both medium pace and off spin, he wicket keeps and is very good in the field. Liam's batting is his real strength.

He is able to hold up one end and bat through an innings or score quickly when needed to. One of Liam's other strengths is he is a team man and totally loyal to his team mates. Never have I heard or seen any jester that was more positive toward his team mates.

We will all look forward to following Liam's cricket career, as we believe he certainly has the ability and desire to go a long way.

Errol Gilbert

Best Performance 10A

Season 2006/07 - HENRY THORNTON

Henry had a fantastic season with Sylvania 10A's, continuing his great form from last year and being a major contributor in getting the team to the Finals for the second year in a row.

His outstanding individual performances were achieved in all aspects of the game: batting, bowling and fielding. His amazing statistics, particularly the batting (not including finals - 413 runs at 68.8) don't bear the true dominance of Henry's skill as he missed the first two matches and was "retired out" twice in the 70's and 80's in order to give the other batsmen a go.

The highlight of his batting this season was undoubtedly his maiden century of 123 not out - this being his first innings of the competition and consisting of 18 boundaries. He batted with a strength, maturity and knowledge of the art which is beyond his years. His bowling was also outstanding with his pace and aggression smashing through the batsmen and earning 14 wickets (not including the finals). Combined with his athletic fielding, 7 catches and a runout, he was a dominant force in every aspect of the game in every match he played this year.

Congratulations Henry on a great season and receiving recognition with this award. From all at Sylvania - we look forward to seeing you continue to improve, mature and gain further success in your cricket career. Well done!

Best Performance 14A

Season 2005/06 - DYLAN SMITH

In a St Patrick's team that was full of very talented, 1st year under 14's players, Dylan Smith had an exceptional season. His season statistics of 421 runs at an average of 46.8 batting at number four, combined with 21 wickets at an average of 6.52, only serve to give some indication of his marvellous cricketing skills.

Highlights of the year included his ton against competition winners Engadine during 3 hours of batting bliss and his brutal assault at Woolooware where he hit 13 fours in 61 runs in under 60 minutes. Dylan is also a spearhead bowler and his 3 for 3 off an unplayable 5 overs as his team searched for an outright win was typical. His skill in the field is demonstrated by taking 10 catches, including 3 caught & bowled. Dylan represented Sutherland in the well-performed Gee Shield team and was rewarded with selection as an Emerging Blue for a second consecutive year.

Despite all his success, those associated with Dylan will speak of astute captaincy skills and an unassuming, positive nature combined with an encouraging, supportive approach to his team-mates. The sign of a class player (and person) is often reflected in the manner that they train and Dylan's attendance and 100% commitment at training makes him a coach's dream. From your club, your team and your friends, congratulations Dylan on receiving such a prestigious award.

Best Performance 12A

Season 2005/06 - SHAYNE SMITH

A terrific season for Shayne Smith and another season of milestones for this gifted player. Highlights of his year were obviously his two centuries, 179* scored in round five and 111 scored in round 10, but they were backed up by consistent run scoring in the other games as well. If his coach had not declared on him twice in the chase for outright points his season total of 495 runs at an average of 70.71 could have been much higher.

While his batting deeds are notable, his bowling is also worthy of mention as he combines pure pace with some well disguised variations to keep the batsmen guessing. The highlight of this aspect of his game was on display in round 2 taking 4 for 8 in 4 mesmerising overs. Taking 14 wickets at an average of 8.5 was just reward for all the hard work at training.

His on field captaincy improves with each match and he leads by example with his smart work in looking for run outs and a safe pair of hands when catching. His club, team and coach wish to congratulate Shayne on his achievements this year.

Best Performance 10A

Season 2005/06 - ETHAN GRINHAM

Without doubt the leader of the St Patrick's 10A team who's deeds inspired his teammates. Ethan's batting was without peer and he compiled 465 runs at an amazing average of 51.2. He only failed to reach fifty on three occasions and one of those occasions was a 49!

His power combined with great touch made him a treat to watch and his was the wicket most prized by opposition teams. Ethan only just missed out on the under 10 SSJCA record for most runs in a season. (His coach has since apologised for retiring him in the first game of the year.) When you combine his batting skills together with his bowling you have the complete cricketer. He terrorized batsmen all year with his searing pace and accuracy that saw him take 13 wickets at an average of 5.7.

A fantastic season for a fantastic young cricketer. Congratulations Ethan on this wonderful accolade. Your team and the St Patrick's Cricket Club are excited by your award.

Best Performance 14A

Season 2004/05 - ALEC JUDD

Alec captained the Caringbah Sports 14A side to 8 wins and 2 losses over the 2004/05 season with the team ultimately finishing as losing finalists. He took responsibility for all decisions made during each game, displaying a strong understanding of technical & tactical aspects of the game whilst always respecting good sportsmanship and a strong commitment to ensuring each match was always played in a spirit highly espoused by supporters.

While he celebrated and encouraged good performances of his team mates, his own performances were impressive. His club batting aggregate of 384 runs at an average of 38.5 runs together with his bowling performances (93 overs, 28 maidens, 21 wickets for 161 runs at an average of 7.67 runs) reflect his strong talent with both bat and ball.

He captained the (representative) Moore Shield side and was again selected for the (East) Emerging Blues side during the season. He is a worthy winner of this award and is to be congratulated for the performances and leadership he evidenced throughout the 2004/05 season.

Best Performance 12A

Season 2004/05 - SHAYNE SMITH

This season was Shayne Smith's first year in the 12-year age group and his all round performance has been outstanding. His ability to anticipate his opponent's next move gave him many opportunities creating catches, run-outs and excellent field play.

His bowling was extremely accurate resulting in nearly half his wickets being bowted giving him an amazing total of 17 wickets for the season and his best figures were 4 wickets for 4 runs off 8 overs.

Shayne is a natural opening batsman and given the chance goes on to make large scores. His maturity is beyond his years in the way he approaches and executes his game plan. He was able to accumulate over 300 runs and his best performance was 70 n/o.

Shayne also captained the Creak Shield for Sutherland this year and his team made it to the semi-finals. His determination in all areas of the game incJuding support for teammates makes him an extremely valued team member. Congratulations and well deserved Shayne, keep up your high standard and you will fulfill your dreams.

Best Performance 10A

Season 2004/05 - HAYDEN SMITH

Hayden Smith came to the Bosco C.C. this year with a reputation of a good junior cricketer. His stats for the year certainly back. that up. Runs 472 Av. 67.43 HS 78, Bowling 20 wickets for 139 at an Av. 6.95 & taking 9 catches.

Hayden was made captain & immediately showed a cricket brain well beyond his years. He was also very supportive & encouraged all the other boys to achieve performances that enabled the Bosco 10A team to have a very good year. At both training & on game day he was always interested in helping the other boys improve their own skills. .

Someone one day asked me what was his strength batting or bowling, my answer was simple, cricket skills, all of them. He batted brilliantly, bowled with pace & accuracy & his fielding in any position was of the highest quality, two of the catches he took were just brilliant.

Finally, Hayden's cricket speaks for itself. I would like to relate a story that shows why Hayden has impressed me as a young man & a leader. Hayden & Jack Darlington put on a 90 odd opening stand. Jack. had to retire due to injury, Hayden continued on to be out for 60 odd. In the 50's I said to him I was giving Jack the Man of the Week award, Hayden's reply was, even if I get a 100 Jack should be the Man of the Week.

It was Jack's first time as an opener. Hayden Smith', a true champion in the making.

Best Performance 14A

Season 2003/04 - GRANT DAVIES

The selection of Grant Davies as the 2003/2004 Under 14 Player of the Year is appropriate recognition for a fine individual and player who truly came of age as a cricketer this season. Grant showed that his abundance of raw ability is equaled with sound techniques.

Grant has long been an outstanding competitor in many sports and it is exceptionally pleasing to see him take that next step in his cricket career and mature into a dominant cricketer able to perform consistently at the highest level.

The 2003/2004 season saw Grant amass 434 runs from nine innings, including two centuries (114 and 104), at an average of 54.2 and take 21 wickets at an average of 6.24.

Grant more than justified his opening batting and bowling position for the Sylvania 14A's. Grant has developed an extremely consistent line and length that tied many a batsmen down which coupled with his speed and height enabled him to secure 21 wickets for the season. His batting was just as effective. Whilst always having had great hand eye coordination it was Grant's improvement in his technique and temperament that allowed him to score so many runs this season.

Combine these batting and bowling performances with Grant's dynamic abilities in the field and you truly have an outstanding cricketer capable of performing at much higher levels.

Grant's performances were rewarded with his selection in the Moore Shield team where he acquitted himself with distinction.

Grant is an individual whose success is the result of his ability to listen and learn, his dedication and determination and his tireless efforts in practicing and honing the skills necessary to perform so successfully and consistently.

The entire Sylvania Club congratulates Grant on such a fine season.

Best Performance 12A

Season 2003/04 - MATT BEATTIE

Already an accomplished player at club and representative level, 2003/04 was a stand-out season for Matt. Let's have a look at the stats he compiled in a very competitive 12A competition:

  • 403 runs at an impressive average of 57.57 (including a superb 118 no).
  • 8 wickets at an economical rate of 1.52 runs per over.
  • 4 catches.

This year Matt was given the responsibility to co-captain the Como-Jannali team, and in turn this enabled him to step up and lead by example in all departments of the game. He did so with style and maturity. In the field, his ability to read the game and his involvement was exemplary.

With Matt batting at 1st drop he demonstrated with regular consistency what a little bit of focus and determination to occupy the crease is all about. Not everyone is fortunate to experience what scoring a century is like, however Matt shared that experience with his fellow team mates in the second game of the season to produce a flawless 118 not out. It was an innings which was a pleasure to watch.

When not attacking with the bat, Matt's bowling with his high right arm action and follow through provided many surprisingly quick, accurate and swinging deliveries. This was reflected in his economical end of season figures.

Matt's all round performance together with his selection to represent SSJCA in the Cawsey Shield brought its own rewards. Achieving this Award has capped off an admirable season.

Well done Matt, congratulations from your team and club.

Phil Kubinek.

Best Performance 10A

Season 2003/04 - BEN DWARSHUIS

The 2003/04 cricket season may well go down as the season that Ben Dwarshuis was 'discovered'. Ben's emerging talents blossomed this season.

Ben has a fine cricketing brain, his understanding of the game, accompanied by his talent, were major contributing factors to the success he has enjoyed during the season.

The statistics show us that Ben scored a phenomenal 459 runs at an average of over 65. Ben broke the existing SSJCA record for the most runs scored in the 10A competition. This tally included consecutive, undefeated centuries as well as another score in excess of 90. Whilst Ben will be remembered for his run scoring feats, it would be remiss not to mention his all round cricket skills. Ben's bowling came on in leaps and bounds during the season.

Ben's bowling has developed to mix steady medium pace in with a left arm orthodox finger spin option. Ben is an excellent ground fieldsman with a fine eye and is capable of more than his fair share of direct hit run outs from his strong throwing arm. His catching is also very reliable.

Ben participated in the under 10 SSJCA development squad that was run during the season.

Ben has maintained a level head despite his success. His attributes of having the team's welfare ahead of his own performances and desire to win, whilst retaining a sporting demeanour are testaments to this talented young man and his family.

Congratulations Ben on an outstanding season.

Robert Hobden.

Best Performance 14A

Season 2002/03 - AARON MALL

It is no surprise that Aaron Mall is the Association's 14 year player of the Year this year. He has the technique, concentration and understanding of the game to go with his natural ability.

This season Aaron developed into a genuine attacking fast bowler. He complements this talent with an increasing ability with the bat and his fielding is exceptional

Aaron's cricket took a fair step forward in the season just finished. He developed a genuine fast ball which he uses selectively to support his stock line and length deliveries. He also bowls a good second spell all about control and containment and a lot of his 27 wickets for the season came in the second spells.

As well, Aaron's statistics with the bat show a very successful season. Always a batsman that could "stick", Aaron developed size in the last year or so and has become more aggressive to the fuller ball, as well as scoring a lot of runs from bowling that started middle stump and drifted to leg. But in becoming more affirmative in his batting, he did not forsake technique. Caringbah Sports got a lot of value from getting Aaron to the crease earlier than he has batted previously in his career and he proved that he had capacity to dominate good bowlers early. Eight innings for 325 runs at an average of 65 tells its own story

Congratulations to a good and popular cricketer who is a true all rounder.

Best Performance 12A

Season 2002/03 - ALEC JUDD

Two years ago Alec won this award for the 10A competition - what a fantastic effort to again win it for the 12A's! There were a number of fine players in the 12A competition but Alec's statistics show that he thoroughly deserves this award. He scored 399 runs at 39.9, captured 19 wickets at 5.5 and took 6 catches.

Alec was also the captain of his team and for someone so young, his knowledge of the game and his leadership qualities were outstanding. He led from the front and always offered words of encouragement to his teammates. There were many games where he ran the team by himself in the field with little input from the coach.

The highlight of Alec's season was his 92 and 5/20 against eventual Premiers Engadine in Round 5. With Alec's concentration, his ability to play all the strokes, as well as his excellent shot selection, he will not have to wait too long for his maiden century.

Alec's bowling showed that you don't have to bowl quickly to take wickets. He consistently attacked the stumps and kept the ball up. He even developed a slower ball which I'm sure he won't overuse next year.

Alec's fielding was inspirational. Alec set the example in the field.

Congratulations Alec, from your coach, your team mates and all members of Caringbah Sports Cricket Club. Continue to enjoy the game" and to play it in the right spirit - further success will naturally follow.

Best Performance 10A

Season 2002/03 - BRETT JOHNSON

This award reflects the outstanding season Brett has had for Gymea. His exceptional results can be put down to Brett's natural talent for cricket, combined with his hard work and willingness to learn at training and his sheer enjoyment in playing the game.

Brett scored 243 runs this season and was one of the few batsman in the 10A's who was developing a genuine batting technique. He worked hard on his game and by the end of the season he had the ability to play shots off both the front and back feet and on both sides of the wicket. His 243 runs came in an abundance of drives and pull shots and it was his ability to concentrate for long periods of time at the crease that allowed him to score so many runs. An off-drive he hit for four against Illawong was a highlight of the season for his coaches.

Brett has special all round skills and he also took the new ball for Gymea. He was one of the fastest bowlers in the competition, but it was his control of the new ball and his consistency in bowling at the stumps allowed Brett to get a number of early wickets cheaply. Brett's first spell would usually pick up the team early wickets and he would always have less runs than overs bowled next to his name. Brett was also a more than capable fielder with a powerful arm and a safe set of hands.

Brett was a team player and his friendly spirit gained him admiration from his team mates and the opposition. Brett is a type of person who you love to coach and his enthusiasm rubs off on everyone around him.

Best Performance 14A

Season 2001/02 - STEVEN SMITH

Yet again, Steven has played another outstanding season of crid(ot. Two years ago he was selected as the most outstanding 12A player and two years prior to that he was the most outstanding 10A player. So watch out in 2 years time for the 16A's.

During this season Steven made a total of 388 runs at an average of 55 with his best innings of 141no. His batting is always a pleasure to watch and being opener each game, other team players felt confident he would stand up against the quality bowling attacks without a worry.

His bowling, which he has recently changed from pace to legspin, was no different, taking 12 wickets for 83 in 61 overs, an average of just 6.9. Steven's fielding is also, always outstanding which shows in that fact that he took 5 catches and with his throwing accuracy he caused quite a few runouts.

Steven's consistency over many years has seen him regularly selected to play Representative cricket and selection in the Emerging Blues side.

Congratulations Steven, you are a worthy recipient of this cricket award and if your ded~cation and attitude towards cricket continues, I reckon we will see you playing for NSW very soon.

Sally Ann Copp.

Best Performance 12A

Season 2001/02 - JAKE BRAIN

The 2001/02 season unearthed many talents - some old and quite a few new ones - but the most outstanding talent was Jake Brain.

Jake captained both his club side (Sylvania 12A) and the Cawsey Shield Team with gusto and enthusiasm, continually looking for a way to snare that elusive wicket. His batting was superb at both levels (400+ at club level & 180+ at rep level) for the year.

Jake's athleticism in the field was outstanding, holding that difficult catch stopping that certain four.

Who could forget Jake on the front foot against Illawong in a rain shortened match taking 18 off the last over of the game, only to be dismissed off the last ball of the match, seeing his side lose by .01 of a run.

Congratulations Jake Brain!!!

Best Performance 10A

Season 2001/02 - NICHOLAS SHARMAN

What a great season! 259 runs at an average of 28.8, 19 wickets at 5.5, a hat trick, 8 catches and captaining his team to a premiership. Nicholas is certainly a deserving winner of this award. He was the standout player in the Under 10 competition.

It's very difficult for a 10 year old to captain a side and to concentrate on his own game. Nicholas was able to do this easily showing a maturity and an understanding of the game beyond his years.

Nicholas is a left arm bowler with genuine pace for his age. Most of his wickets during the season were bowled having learnt that line and length is more important than bowling as fast as you can. The highlight was his hat trick in the first game of the season - all bowled.

Nicholas' batting went from strength to strength. He is a natural timer of the ball and is able to punish anything short. His defence improved greatly as the season progressed as he learnt to steadily accumulate runs rather than trying to pull every ball to the boundary. His running between wickets was aggressive and he always gave encouraging words to fellow batsmen.

Nicholas' fielding was outstanding. He has "soft" hands for someone so young (evidenced by his 8 catches), a strong and accurate throwing arm, and an ability to read the game.

It's unfortunate that Nicholas was unable to play Representative cricket this season due to other sporting commitments but I'm sure we'll be seeing his name in future Rep teams.

Congratulations Nicholas, from your coach, your team mates and all members of Caringbah Sports Cricket Club. Continue to enjoy the game and to play it in the right spirit. You certainly have the skills and attitude to achieve further success.

Season 2000/01 - CHRIS WILLIAMS

Chris has recently completed the 2000/2001 cricket season with significant individual performances that have highlighted his all round cricketing abilities.

His performances in every match (as an opening batsman, medium- fast bowler or outstanding fieldsman) were clearly inspiring to his teammates. During the season, as a batsman Chris scored just under 400 runs, captured important wickets with his bowling and was dominant in the field in various key positions.

He continues to devote time for the ongoing development of his considerable cricket skills, regularly encourages his team mates to achieve higher playing levels, is highly respected by his peers and clearly enjoys any challenge offered in the game of cricket (always within the rules and spirit oftbe game).

Chris was a prominent player in the representative team this season (Moore Shield), which narrowly lost to the strong South Eastern side in the semi-finals. Chris has outstanding personal and cricket abilities that will no doubt see him progress to achieve higher playing honors in the future.

Congratulations Chris, from your team mates and all members of the Sylvania Heights Cricket Club, you are a very worthy recipient of this award for your outstanding contributions to cricket in 2000/2001.

Season 2000/01 - STEVEN SMITH

Two years ago Steven captured most of the awards for the 10A competition. For those that have seen him play at his best it will come as no surprise, but rather they will see it as a natural progression to hear that he has now been selected as the most outstanding 12A player for the season 2000/2001, having accumulated 292 runs at an average of 48.66, and taken 2 wickets and 7 catches.

Steven was captain of his team and carried out his duties with respect for his teammates and opponents showing maturity and a grasp of the game's strategies beyond his years.

His fielding was outstanding with several run outs from direct hits and slips catches that would be classed as brilliant at any level of cricket. He was the leading batsman in the grade with top scores of 76 n.o. and 73 n.o. displaying a fluent, hard hitting style complemented by a natural determination to succeed.

Other achievements this year include representing Sutherland in the Cawsey Shield and being named as the Cawsey Player of the Year. He was also selected in the schools PSSA Metropolitan East team and is a member of the NSW District Cricket Association Metropolitan East team.

He has had a very successful season and is now being rewarded for his hard work and outstanding performances. I have no doubt we will hear more about Steven as his dedication and attitude should bring him future success.

Season 2000/01 - ALEC JUDD

What a fantastic season! The raw statistics are 265 runs at an average of 33.1, 12 wickets at an average of 9.9, and 7 catches and 3 or 4 run outs.

Alec was the stand out player in the team and was an inspiration to the other players.

When batting Alec always followed the rule of blocking or letting go the good balls and punishing the bad balls. He played to his strengths and scored a large number of his runs by pushing the ball into the gaps. His running was aggressive and he always got full value for his shots. He had a couple of scores in the forties, (one of which was a not out when the coach declared) and his season culminated in a fine 83 in the last game.

In bowling Alec followed the principles of pitching the ball up and bowling on the stumps. Most of the wickets that he claimed were bowled and on many occasions he found the edge but the catches were not taken. Alec's bowling also developed throughout the year with the addition of both an out swinger and an in swinger.

In the field Alec was truly an inspiration, he chased down everything and did not let the ball get past. He has a good pair of hands and a fine cricket brain. He also worked well at calming the team down when other players started to panic in tight situations.

Alec was a pleasure to coach and I am sure that he has a fine future in cricket. Not only does he have all the skills but he also plays the game in the right spirit.

Season 1999/00 - RYAN SHEPHERD

Ryan had an outstanding season scoring 665 runs at the exceptional average of 95. He captured 22 wickets at an average of 10, and took 15 catches. Ryan has eclipsed our Club's highest run aggregate for one season as well as surpassing the best average since the Club's inception 41 years ago. His achievements were acknowledged as recipient of the Club's most prestigious award, the "Barry McManus (Snr) Trophy" for "Junior Club Champion".

Ryan, a hard hitting batsman, fast bowler and exceptional fieldsman in any position, was mainly instrumental in his club winning the 14A competition.

He was also one of the leading batsmen in the Association's "Moore Shield" Premiership team scoring 352 runs at an average of 70.04 in the series, including the Finals.

His consistency during the season was remarkable as the following figures show and together with his ability to score runs when it counted in finals cricket indicates him to be a player with outstanding ability.

  • Final- 57

Moore Shield

Season 1999/00 - CHAD WILLIAMS

This was Chad's first season of cricket in Australia, his family having emigrated from South Africa in January 1999. Fortunately, they chose to settle in Como-Jannali territory.

From the first practice session it was apparent that Chad had talent and his skills were effectively displayed throughout the season.

With the bat he scored 416 runs at an average of 37.82 with best scores of 111 no and 99. His' effort saw him break the club batting aggregate for U12's which has stood since the amalgamation of the Como and Jannali clubs in 1990/91.

In the field he was both athletic and energetic and this saw him take 13 catches, some of which were classics whilst he also managed 4 run outs with direct hits.

His bowling, where he took 8 wickets fell away towards the end of the season, perhaps because he was trying too hard, but greater focus on line and length will enhance his skills as a genuine all rounder.

Chad can look back on his season's performance with pride, and provided he stays committed he has a big future in the game.

Season 1999/00 - JAKE BRAIN

It's fair to say that Jake possesses a talent above most 10 year olds. During the 99/2000 season he displayed his natural cricket ability with both bat and ball. He was also given the honour of captaining the Foster Shield representative team, a job he did well, considering the enormous pressure he was under on occasions. His ability to take command in difficult situations often had the desired result. Efforts with the bat in the club competition netted him some 340 runs for the season at an average of 42.57 and with the ball, 11 wickets and 13 catches. I'm sure we are going to see a lot more of Jake Brain in future years, congratulations and well done.

Best Performance 14A

Season 1996/97 - Luke Dudman - Caringbah Sports

Luke had another outstanding season in 96/97. After winning the equivalent award two years ago in the U/12's and finishing high on both the batting and bowling merit lists last year in the U/I4's. We had high expectations of Luke's performance this year. He certainly didn't let us down.

At club level he scored 562 runs at an average of 93.7, took 10 wickets and 9 catches, captained the premiership winning team, and set a fine example for every cricketer in the competition with his enthusiasm and dedication.

He captained the Moore Shield team, again topping the batting with an average of over 70 and scoring a magnificent century. I had the pleasure of watching Luke score over 900 runs at all levels of cricket this year and his complete determination of the bowling was a real pleasure to observe. Luke is at the threshold of an exciting career in senior cricket and his natural ability and determination will ensure his success.

Luke was also the only member of the AW Green Shield side from the U/14 competition this year, which in itself was a fine achievement.

Luke is the complete cricketer whose enthusiasm for the game is contagious. Congratulations Luke, you are a very worthy recipient of this award.

Season 1996/97 - Michael Elliott - Illawong

Michael has recently completed the 96/97 season with exceptional individual performances which highlight his all round cricketing abilities.

As a batsman Michael displayed power hitting and good shot selection to score 361 runs at an average of 40.11. Two centuries and a half century kept the scorers busy as did an aggressive and entertaining 89 not out in 63 balls during the first round of the Arch Cawsey Shield against Gladesville.

At times alternating between medium pace and off spin, he collected 24 wickets at 7.25 including a hat trick!

At representative level he bowled steadily and economically as part of a well balance side.

Six catches in the outfield including two chances at critical times added to his individual statistics but also demonstrated his desire and ability to support his team mates.

He has represented Sutherland for the past 3 years as a member ofa team which won the J.H.Creak Shield and reached the final of the Arch Cawsey Shield. He has recently been selected in the Metropolitan Squad and deservedly been recognised as the Illawong Junior Cricketer of the Year Award.
