Illawong Menai
Illawong Menai has grown into a strong and competitive club since joining in 77/78. Based in the western end of the Shire it draws from a large suburban area that has grown extensively since the early 80's. The Illawong Cricket Club was started during 1977 with Don Trounce as the first President. The Club was born out of the Illawong Sports and Recreation Club which was based at Illawong Public School. It broke away to become the Illawong Menai District Cricket Club. It became incorporated in October 1991 as the Illawong Cricket Club having dropped the words "Menai" and "District".
The Club's first Team in the 77/78 season was an Under 10 team. This team had been coached during the previous year without playing in a competition in readiness for the Club's debut season. The Club's early teams trained on the oval behind Illawong Public School which at the time was about two thirds of its current size and was shared with softball. At this time the Club built the first set of nets in the area on the Illawong School Oval, nets which still exist today.
The Club steadily grew as the area grew with the building of the Alfords Point Bridge. In the 84/85 season a young Jason Gillespie was the Club's Junior Cricketer of the Year and Harry Solomons of Kingsgrove Sports Centre was Senior Cricketer of the Year and President, the club had 9 Teams. In 02/03 Illawong added Menai back into the name and at about the same time reintroduced the Kookaburra to the Club logo. In February 2008 the club celebrated its 30th year and in that time has won 58 junior premierships and one Club Championship.
The clubs In2Cricket program attracted 60 children under 8 to Coachwood Oval during December 2009. Many of these children will join our current teams in the 10/11 competitions. The club prides itself on the policy of giving every one a go. It does not matter how the game is going, win or lose, everyone gets a bat and a bowl at Illawong.
In the 09/10 season the club had 18 junior and 7 senior teams taking the field each Saturday. Of these, 16A's won their premierships with many others giving their competitions a good go.
Junior Cricketer of the Year for the 09/10 season, presenter with the Jason Gillespie Trophy, was Jamie Brown, who also won the SSJCA Cricketer of the Year.
