SSJCA Finals Series Wrapup

March 16th, 2009

The finals this year were an exciting time for all our junior players.  From the amazing efforts of Chris Jago for St John Bosco who scored 176* in a final (check the record book on that one - highest ever score in a final…) through to Engadine Dragons winning 3 of the 4 “A” grade comps, this season has been a joy to behold for the parents and supporters of all the teams.

If you have any photos, reports or news you would like to share with the Shire cricket community, then send it through to photos@ssjca.com.au and we will post it here or alternatively we can arrange a CDRom to be picked up.

Enjoy the off season and we will catch you for the SSJCA Presentation Day on 31st May 2009.

Click here for the full wrap up including match reports and photo galleries.  Keep checking back for additional items as they are posted.

Gymea wins twice - Club Championship & Weetbix Comp

March 13th, 2009

It’s been a busy time for the Gymea Bay Cricket Club. Not only have they taken home the club championship for 2008/09, eclipsing Engadine Dragons by 3 pts, but they have won the Weetbix competition, earning their club $20,000 plus a visit from Brett Lee in the lead up to the finals.

Getting a few pointers before the weekend finals, Brett appeared at a training session with Gymea players. In a Daily Telepgraph article it quotes “His popularity has not waned, as he was mobbed by the winners of a Weet-Bix competition at Gymea Bay Cricket Club yesterday.”

SSJCA Final Series

March 8th, 2009

March is a great time of the year.  Autumn is kind in terms of weather, the grass is finally becoming green again, and the boys and girls in junior cricket are preparing for the finals.  To play in a cricket final is a special occasion.  The crowd is a little bigger, the players a little more apprehensive.  A final is a day where anything can happen.  Teams that haven’t missed a beat all year, suddenly hiccup. Players, who have struggled, search within and produce something special.

Help celebrate the season by attending one of finals and show your support for the best the Shire has to offer.

Full list of finals available here>>

Additionally, we would love to receive and display your finals photos. If you would like to submit photos to be displayed on this website, please email photos along with a short description of the events.

Cricket NSW Coaching Update

March 4th, 2009

Education & training of coaches, umpires & volunteers currently sits 2nd among Cricket Australia’s 6 priorities in the National Participation Strategy. Cricket NSW’s Community Cricket Dept continues to work closely with each of our stakeholders to maximise the opportunities for potential contributors to become involved.

This year education & training was again a highlight within Sydney East. Our region has again been at the forefront of this area which is largely thanks to your efforts in assisting with the organisation & promotion of these courses.

Here is some feedback for all of those involved with the organisation of education & training programs for this season:

Introduction to Cricket Course (free on-line precursor to Level 1 introduced in late 2008)

352 participants completed the course in NSW (45% of all participants across Australia)
60 participants were from Sydney East (more than in WA, SA, TAS, NT or ACT)
Note that all future Level 1 participants will be required to complete the course. However, this is a valuable aid for current coaches & any other volunteers or players from your club
The course is available at www.cricket.com.au/introductiontocricket

Level 1 Coaching Course

15 Level 1 courses have been conducted in Sydney East this year
190 new Level 1 coaches, more than twice as much as any other region in NSW
35% of all new Level 1 coaches this year were from Sydney East

Level 1 Umpires Course

A new course introduced this year which I would like to work with each association to target their specific needs
1 of 4 courses held this year were held in Sydney East
22 of 92 new Level 1 Umpires were from Sydney East

On behalf of Cricket NSW I would like to thank you all for your contributions. This ongoing focus on education & training will continue to enhance the quality of cricket & just as importantly the experience had by each young cricketer. I look forward to working on this & other areas of cricket with you again next season. If you have any queries please don’t hesitate to contact me.

U10 Dev Squad Final Session at SCG

March 4th, 2009

The Under 10 Development Squad headed back out to the SCG for one final time for an indoor nets sessions at the High Performance centre. It was a great ending to a fantastic season of learning and development for the boys. They have had 4 nets sessions at Anzac, played a proper 40 over match amongst themselves with official umpires and then played a Twenty/20 comp against other associations. Also, if anyone follows the U10’s, you can see the improvement in performances of those boys lucky enough to gain selection in the squad.

The SSJCA recommends all U10 players for next season take part in the squad, as it will help your own personal development in Cricket and prepare the boys for future challenges.

U16 President’s Cup Match Reports

March 4th, 2009

We have now posted the match reports from the U16’s President Cup season.

Catch up on all the action, like…

With afternoon tea approaching the ball was tossed to Matt Reynolds who struck with his second ball to send us to he break. With 25 runs needed and 6 wickets left North Shores parents were very relaxed. What followed would have them on the edge of their seats for the rest of the game.

As the boys walked onto the field Matt asked Chris how to bowl an inswinger. Chris gave him a brief lesson and gave the ball a polish. Matt’s next ball swung a foot and ripped out leg stump. He followed that with one that swung less but trapped the hapless batsman right in front to claim a fantastic HAT-TRICK. Talk about a quick learner!!!

Check them out on the Rep Cricket page.
