Representative Cricket

On the road to the highest level

Rep Cricket is split into 2 competitions - Shield (NSWDCA) and Presidents.

From our trials on 2 Sundays held in September each year, the first squad of 12 plays Shield cricket (NSWDCA). Our second squad plays Presidents.

Shield Cricket is run by Cricket NSW. Presidents is run by the Associations and is considered a development game, preparing kids for Shield if selected in later years.

Shield

Season Starts Late October with a trial game against St George in early October, and runs til Mid December if the team make the final. It is played on Sundays from 9am to 5pm and training is usually conducted on Fridays (depends on coach choice).

Presidents

Season Start Late October with a Twenty/20 Gala Round followed by 7 rounds, 4 prior to Christmas, from Late November through to the Mid December. It then kicks off again Late January through to the Mid February. It is played on Sundays and training is usually on Fridays.

For both competitions, games are played in the Sydney region, plus Newcastle, Canberra, Illawong and the Central Coast.

For the above games, every player needs to be available for every date. Rep Cricket is the best level these kids can aspire to and it is run with due respect.

Costs are $90 dollars plus you need to buy the clothing - playing shirt, training shirt, baseball cap - about another $60-70. Each player is provided with a Baggy Cap plus a set of photos to mark the occasion. In previous years Phil Jacques, Glenn McGrath and Len Pascoe have handed out the caps to the new players.

SSJCA Structure for Representative Cricket

Representative cricket is the second rung on the ladder to playing cricket at the highest level, playing for Australia. SSJCA enables the development of our junior players by introducing three levels of representative cricket. Recently, Cricket NSW has publicly stated that the SSJCA runs a "Best Practice" model for development of our elite players.

Initially, as a young cricketer, SSJCA runs a development squad for our Under 10 players. The players receive specialised coaching focusing on batting, bowling and fielding over a number of Sunday's. At the conclusion of the program, the players are split into 2 teams and compete against each other under Rep Cricket conditions. In prior years, the players have been invited to participate in SCG events, where they get to play on the SCG during a State game, and inter-association Twenty/20 Gala days. These are arranged by Cricket NSW.

Secondly, SSJCA participates in the President's Cup in ages 11 through to 16. It has proved a very popular introduction to representative cricket to many a player whom has missed out on selection in the NSWDCA.

Thirdly, young SSJCA cricketers aspiring to the highest levels first do so by gaining selection to teams entered by the Association in the NSW Districts Cricket Association (NSWDCA) annual competitions. Current Australian players to have played in this competition are Steven Smith, Michael Clarke and Doug Bollinger. It is considered the toughest competition for cricket at this age.

From the Moore, Weblin and Watson Shield teams, the best are selected by the Sutherland District Cricket Club to play the A. W. Green Shield.

Advice for Parents
Representative junior cricket is very demanding, the cricket played requires dedication, great teamwork, attitude and self belief.

It requires a substantial commitment from both player and parents alike, but like all commitments, if you commit fully to the experience, it can be very rewarding and enjoyable for all concerned. Your child will be required to play in EVERY pre-season trial game and EVERY competition game during the season. There are slight differences in the dates of these games depending on which of the 2 teams your child gets picked in. The games start at 10am and finish at approx 5.30pm on Sundays. You will be required to be at the ground by 9am for warm-ups etc. The venues for the home games will be within the Shire, however away games can be anywhere in the Sydney metropolitan area, as well as up to Newcastle and down to Wollongong or Canberra.

This is a very big commitment and it is important to understand that if your child is selected that they are required to play in EVERY game, there are NO exceptions, this includes friends birthday parties, school plays, family BBQs, etc. It is also a requirement that everyone turns up at 9am regardless of the weather, games will not be called off until the umpires deem that a game cannot be played. This may mean that you arrive at 9am and have to stay until 2pm before a game is called off; this is just part of playing representative cricket.

Your child will also be required to turn up to ALL training sessions during the season. If this day and time clashes with his club/school training session then the representative session MUST take preference. This also applies to any match day game, representative fixtures ALWAYS take preference.

But never forget - It will be the biggest highlight of your child playing days - nothing matches playing Representative Cricket in the toughest comp in Australia.
