Watson Shield
Season 2008/09
Team
- Mitchell Foster; Mitchell Vassallo; Sean Mulally (Vice-Captain); Adam Thorogood (Captain); Brett Johnson (Vice-Captain); Michael Grant; Gregory Wissam Andrew Gilchrist; Martin Henry; Daniel Thomas; Duncan Hunt; Nicholas McCarthy; Matthew McCarthy
The SSJCA Watson Shield side this year took on a new look from the Weblin Shield side of the previous year, and as such an exciting opportunity presented itself to the new players selected in the team. The enthusiasm generated by the infusion of these new players was infectious and looking back on what was definitely a successful series was the basis of the enjoyment and success experienced.
Adam Thorogood was chosen to lead the team, and this selection brought out the best in Adam on and off the field. He was well supported by a leadership group of the more experienced players which included Brett Johnson, Sean Mulally, Daniel Thomas, Greg Wissam and Duncan Hunt. Each of these players left their mark on the side and achieved the goals we set at the start of the series. The trial match was a coming of age for the boys, with a commanding win over their nemesis side St.George. Played at Glenn McGrath Oval the Sutherland lads compiled a massive score off their 60 overs, the highlights being a magnificent and belligerent century by the Captain, and solid half centuries by several of his peers. Into the field and the Saints had no answer to the aggressive and consistent approach taken by our bowlers and fieldsmen. This set the tone for what lay ahead.
Round 1 of the series was against Fairfield Liverpool at Rosedale and a completely dominant performance was witnessed. Sutherland dismissed F-L for 156 in a brilliant bowling and fielding exhibition. Superb performances by Martin Henry (3 wkts), Mitch Foster (3 wkts) were the highlights, supported by brilliant outfielding and 4 catches to the keeper Captain. After the loss of an early wicket, we had no trouble passing the total for the loss of just 2 wickets in 35 overs. Mitch Vassallo (22) was excellent however the performances of Daniel Thomas (67no) and Thorogood (62no) were priceless.
Round 2 at GMO against Penrith was probably the wake up call we needed. We were totally outplayed in this match with the only performance worth mentioning being a top score of 27 again by the Captain leading the way. The other highlight being the exuberance of the Penrith Coach.
We needed to regroup quickly, and in Round 3 we proved our mettle by convincingly beating North Shore - the eventual Watson Shield Champions!! North Shore were dismissed for 173, courtesy of Michael Grant's 3 wickets and well supported by consistent bowling from Wissam, Henry and Mulally. Again we made short work of reaching the target, this time passing them just 4 wickets down. Duncan Hunt was on fire with 81no and was ably supported by Vassallo (41) and Nic McCarthy (26).
Round 4 was more of the same against Canterbury Wests, where the opposition were removed for just 121. Trump bowlers in this match again being Wissam, Foster, Henry, Johnson, Mulally and Matt McCarthy who was drafted into the side at late notice following a leg injury suffered by fast bowler Andrew Gilchrist. Again we had little trouble reaching their score for the loss of just 4 wickets, with Hunt (34) and Thorogood (35) the standouts.
Round 5 proved to be a disappointing loss to Newcastle, when we seemed to be over the top of them. We batted first and were probably 20 runs short, reaching 163. Leading scorers being Thorogood (42), Vassallo (22) and Foster (23 valuable runs) at the end. Our bowling was terrific and for a while it looked like we'd be victorious, however Newcastle passed us 8 wickets down in a nail biter. Pick of the bowlers in this innings being Johnson (3 wkts) and Mulally (2 wkts).
Overall a series which realised four wins from six games can be considered a success. This was no doubt as a result of the leadership shown by the senior boys on and off the field, and particularly by the Manager Brian Gilchrist who left no stone unturned to ensure everyone was involved at all levels. On the same level, Andrew Gilchrist's team ethic through the entire series while recovering from injury was without peer. The parental support was second to none. Without doubt the most enjoyable series many of us have experienced and on behalf of the team I would like to thank all involved for making it such an enjoyable series.
A great bunch of team mates obviously was the icing on the cake.
In closing, I wish all of these players the very best in their future cricket endeavours, as it is their last year of Juniors. I am confident that each player will find a place in the cricket world that will provide them with their BEST cricketing experience moving forward. Although I would like to think that their experiences this season in the SSJCA Watson Shield will be a fond memory of their Junior Careers.

Weblin Shield
Season 2008/09
Team
- Bryce Coles-Sinclair; Jordan Dow; Nathan Bennison; Nicholas Robertson; Nicholas Panich; Ben Dwarshuis; Chris Curtis; Scott Gordon-Phillips; Matthew Hobden; Alexander Watkiss; Bradley Ford; Adam Whatley;
A new rep season saw us welcome several new boys, namely Brad Ford, Nathan Bennison, Chris Curtis, Alexander Watkiss and Scott Gordon-Phillips to the Weblin Shield side of 2008/09. If results are measured purely on who wins and who loses, then on face value, the Weblin boys had a tough time of it in 08/09. However, results go beyond who wins and who loses. Results can be reflected in attitude, desire to improve and overall support for your teammates. I am pleased to advise, from that end, the Weblin boys of 08/09 did succeed.
Round 1 - Newcastle all out 144 defeated Sutherland all out 80 by 64 runs
Thanks to some local vandals who decided to break into the Glenn McGrath Oval storeroom and set the sprinklers off on the field the night before the game, we started our first game late and with reduced overs. Newcastle batted first and compiled a reasonable, but gettable total of 144. Bowling honours to Nick Panich with 3-24 and Scott Gordon-Phillips with 2-27. Unfortunately our batting let us down poorly and we were dismissed for just 80 runs. Matt Hobden top scored with 22 and only Ben Dwarshuis with 17 and Nathan Bennison with 10, the only other batsmen to make double figures.
Round 2 - Penrith 9-128 defeated Sutherland all out 127 by 1 wicket
A trip out to Emu Plains to take on the red hot favourites for the Weblin title, Penrith. History shows the result was that Penrith defeated Sutherland by one wicket, however the winners on the day were the boys from the Shire who played with great determination and pride. Batting first on a seaming wicket we were in deep trouble at 7-53 with only Bryce Coles-Sinclair with 15 showing the grit needed to fight on the green top. Then an inspired 23 from Chris Curtis, Jordan Dow's quickfire 15, Nick Panich's classy 23 and Alexander Watkiss's swift 10 not out gave Sutherland a total to defend of 127. Consistent bowling, some excellent catching and constant pressure saw Penrith stagger in their chase. Standout bowler was Brad Ford with 4-23 with able support from Scott Gordon-Phillips with 2-28. Yes, we lost by a wicket, but we were very proud of the performance.
Round 3 - North Shore 6-241 defeated Sutherland all out 238 by 4 wickets
How different the conditions were at Roseville compared to our first two games. A hard, flat wicket and tiny, lightning quick outfield. Runs were going to be the order of the day.
Batting first we accumulated 238 thanks to a magnificent 103 not out from skipper, Jordan Dow, a stylish 71 from Ben Dwarshuis and a rapid 19 from Adam Whatley at the start. A competitive total but we would need to bowl well to defend it. In an amazing coincidence, the North Shore captain decided to emulate Jordan's feat and hit an undefeated century in leading his side to a 4 wicket win with 11 balls to spare. 2 wickets each to Brad Ford and Nick Panich being the pick of Sutho's bowlers.
Round 4 - Hornsby all out 96 defeated Sutherland all out 73 by 23 runs
Back to the Shire and Sutherland Oval. A day where the ball completely dominated the bat. After bowling first and restricting Hornsby to just 96 we were high on confidence of recording our first win. Some excellent catching and fielding supported our bowlers who were led by Nick Panich's outstanding 4-10 and Matt Hobden's 2-15. Unfortunately our batting never really got going after being 3-2 after the first 5 overs. Resolute defiance by Ben Dwarshuis (24) and Nick Robertson (13) being the only double figure scorers as we crashed to be all out for 73.
Round 5 - Central Coast 5-245 defeated Sutherland 6-153 by 2 runs on run rate
Our final chance to break the duck. In conditions that would be considered freezing at the South Pole, we went so close.
Central Coast gave us a bit of stick in accumulating 5-245 in their 60 overs with Scott Gordon-Phillips being the only multiple wicket taker with 2-30. Rain (or snow?) during the lunch break caused a delay and a reduction of our overs. Revised target 156 off 38 overs. Alexander Watkiss (16) and Nick Robertson (18) provided wonderful support to Ben Dwarshuis's 57 as we chased the target. Today we saw the real Adam Whatley. Adam belted the Central Coast's bowlers to all parts in his 38. Unfortunately Adam got out to the second last ball and we missed by 2 runs, but an outstanding effort regardless.
Thanks to all the boys for their commitment, mateship and never say die attitude. Well done! Final big thanks to Rod Whatley for taking on the challenge of coaching.

Moore Shield
Season 2008/09
Team
- Hayden McLean; Ryan Agar; Nathan Ellis; Hayden Smith; Brendan Drury; Saty Kar; Jarryd Biviano; Matthew Stanton; Jonathan Haslam; Jordan Trajcevski; Jamie Brown; Emmanuel Shewan
Again a talented group of boys tested the selectors at our only one trial. Eventually we settled with Hayden Smith (C), Nathan Ellis (V.C), Ryan Agar, Jarryd Biviano, Jamie Brown, Brendan Drury, Jonathan Haslam, Satyaki Kar, Hayden McLean, Emmanuel Shewan, Matthew Stanton and Jordan Trajcevski.
We went into our campaign with two new selections in Matthew Stanton and Jordan Trajcevski, as selectors we were confident we selected the best twelve players. Again the team was skippered by Hayden Smith with Nathan Ellis his new deputy.
After our semi-final's disappointing wash out last season we naturally hoped for a similar, if not a better outcome this year. Unfortunately our Moore Shield boy's season was overshadowed by the games harsh reality in the toughest of draws.
With a first up win against St George (subsequent finalists) in our only trial everything fell into place. Nathan's field placements and captaincy was impressive in Hayden's absence.
Our batting as strong as it was the previous year only fired in two games, the first and last, soft in the middle so to say, whilst our bowling attack led by Saty's genuine pace carried our hopes. Again our fielding remained at a high quality.
Our skipper Hayden Smith led the side with flair and imagination, an arduous task for anyone, well done 'Haydo'
Trial v St George. Sutherland 8-184 defeated GRP St George 8-139. J. Haslam 40, E. Shewan 24, J. Trajcevski 27, N. Ellis 26, R.Agar 23*. Wickets shared.
R/1 Sutherland 6-111 defeated Penrith 104. J. Biviano 42n/o, J. Trajcevski 26, H. Smith 22.S. Kar 4-25, N. Ellis 2-4.
R/2 Sutherland 104 was defeated by Bankstown 8-164. H. Smith 34, S. Kar 2-23, R. Agar 3-22.
R/3 Bye. Points gladly accepted!!
R/4 Sutherland 141 was defeated by Newcastle 8-170 J.Trajcevski 70 n/o. H. McLean 2-35.
R/5 Sutherland 4-162 defeated Fairfield Liverpool 140. J.Trajcevski 41, H. Smith 42, J. Brown 37 n/o, B. Drury 20 n/o. Wickets shared.
Our thank you list: Firstly to Jonathan Lamotta for filling in for two matches, thanks mate. To the 'Bivvies' once again complements to the B.B.Q. chef's and your apprentices who then doubled up for the afternoon teas, well worth the calories.
Our manager Alan Vaughan's efforts was outstanding, I only hope your full time employment didn't suffer as a result of our frequent conversations and hook ups, super effort Alan.
Finally to the S.S.J.C.A.: Thanks for your backing and again allowing Chris, Alan and myself the opportunity to be associated with such a fine team of lads. The association can certainly be proud of the twelve boys in this past Moore Shield side who conducted themselves so well on and off the field.

Gee Shield
Season 2008/09
Team
- Ross Hickman; Harrison Chapman; Oliver Selby; Cameron Burgess; Adam Burg; Daniel Fallins; Nick Swanson Jack Wood; Matt Saunders; Ethan Grinham; Ben Williams; Jesse McPhee; Brendan Royall;
It was a series that had almost everything. We ultimately fell a game short of reaching the final but the lads can be well pleased with their efforts to reach the semis after a disappointing first game. This squad has the makings of a very competitive outfit that should realistically improve their results in the coming years.
It wasn't all positive though. At our first training session Brendan Royall badly broke his arm in a fielding accident and was out for the series, only making a return to club cricket in Round 8. This was such a disappointment for Brendan as he had worked so hard to make the team for the first time. Oliver Selby, also debuting this season missed the trial game against St George with a stomach bug. To top it off, Jesse McPhee suffered a damaged shoulder in the warm up to our first game. Could it get any worse?
We were resoundly trounced by Illawarra in Round 1, making barely 120 (Cam 24 and Ethan 22) and taking only 2 wickets before Illawarra reached the target just after tea. At least we got our most disappointing effort out of the way early - from here the rest of the series included some very good bowling, fantastic fielding and at times unbelievable batting which resulted in us reaching the semis.
A good win against Blacktown (4-185 v 10-149) with Harry (44), Jesse (32) and Oliver (35no) among the runs while Jesse and Dan each took a brace of wickets. A road trip to ACT was a highlight of the season with a great team meal at the Italian Club (thanks Janine) on the Saturday evening. Dan unfortunately didn't enjoy it so much as he fell ill on Sunday and could not play due to a stomach virus. A blistering start to the ACT innings was followed by a rapid collapse as Oliver took 3 wickets and Matt 2 to dismiss them for 152 from 42 overs. Against quality bowling, a steady start was followed by an innings of frightening power from Ethan who smashed 75 from 42 balls (12 boundaries and 2 maximums). This was power hitting (look out IPL!) at its best and Jack Wood's 35 from 54 balls would have otherwise grabbed the limelight.
The final game against Bankstown and a solid win was needed to give us a chance of qualifying. Once again Ethan (73) and Jack (64) dominated to help us reach 4 - 187. Dan and Jesse each took 2 wickets and Oliver ripped through with 3/5 to dismiss Bankstown for 111. Outstanding fielding and catching was the highlight and in fact in most games we set the standard in the field - not many could match the athleticism, ground fielding, catching and throwing of these boys.
We snuck into the semi on run rate (that's karma as we missed out on run rate last year) to play Parramatta at Pearce Oval. Jack, Ethan and Oliver each made 20 as we crawled to 99 from 50 overs against a good quality attack and a slow outfield.
We knew we had to bowl out Parramatta so Ethan backed his bowlers and attacked at every opportunity. This was backed up by outstanding fielding from the Sharks. At tea Parramatta had made cautious progress losing 4 wickets but needed only another 18 to win. We knew that we needed to create 6 opportunities if we were to win the game. To the boys' credit they did create 6 legitimate chances however we didn't capitalise on a single one as Parramatta passed us without losing another wicket and went on to win the series.
All of the boys can be pleased with their efforts during the series. As it can be in representative cricket, not everyone got as much batting or bowling as they might have liked, but not once was there a word from any player (or parent) about it. Supporting the team effort was a common goal and all the boys are to be congratulated on that.
Luke McPhee was a great help not only as manager of the team (thanks Jenny McPhee also) but invaluable at our training sessions, coaching the boys and making sure every training session helped to improve performances and attitude. Thanks also to all the parents for your support throughout the series, for your patience when we inevitably went over time on Friday night training and for your encouragement of all the boys, always. Special thanks to Janine Grinham for arranging the ACT trip; it was a real highlight.

The Arch had a very successful season in 2008 making the final for the Arch Cawsey Shield team Cawsey Shield which is a credit to the dedication and application by the boys and coaching staff. The success of the season was mainly due to every player contributing thru out the season
The side was a typical Peter Schofield team with the boys being a well-disciplined, hard working and had a great attitude and desire to improve as individuals and as a cricket team.
The team combined well to win the six (6) games leading to the final which was an exceptional achievement by the players. The whole season was the consummate team effort with each and every one of the boys contributing in each game. There were many games in which the boys were under pressure from the opposition, but no matter what the position of the game, the boys never gave in until the last ball was bowled. Their bowling and fielding thru out the season was a highlight to watch by the spectators and we had several encouragement comments from the umpires and opposition coaches about the way we played the game and the skills we showed in the field. This was demonstrated by bowling out the opposition in 5 of the 7 games and the highest score against the boys being 106. The boys constantly had the opposition under pressure for the 50 overs every game.
On behalf of the boys and Peter, we would like to thank all the parents that helped in transporting the boys, providing tents, scoring, afternoon teas, team bbq's and more importantly supporting their children thru the summer. Thank you to Bill Johnson for assisting Peter during the season. It is much appreciated by all the boys and Peter.

Creak Shield
Season 2008/09
Team
- Joshua Johnston; Josh Horner (Vice-Captain); Jack Thorne (Captain); Joel Drury (Vice-Captain); Jarrod Mazurkiewicz; Dylan Smith; Mathew Griffiths; Henry McCray; Aolei Yu; Angus Fallins; Joel Almond; Joey Cox;
The 2008/09 Creak Shield was an excellent introduction to representative cricket for the 12 players. They played top cricket throughout the year, showing promise for future seasons that they will give the comp a fair shake. During the season, they managed to comprehensively win 3 games and lost 2 in the last over of the game to the eventual semi-finalists. We were in a tough division but held our heads high in taking them to the line.
Our strength was our bowling and fielding, which was consistently of a high standard and had opposition teams in trouble. We held great line and length, troubling the batsmen at each turn. Only 3 opposition players scored above 20 against us, and we bowled 2 teams out for under 50. It was never an individual effort, with boys across the park taking their opportunity when provided.
Our batting was strong, but at times rash shots let us down. Being so young, the boys will learn from this and in time their temperament will improve. A number of standout innings were played during the season and it wasn't only those who top scored, but also those who helped form partnerships, got us off to a good start, or played a whirlwind innings to up the run rate.
The greatest joy as coach for me was watching the team bond together. The majority of the boys were together during the U10 Development Squad in the previous season, and their friendship was strong. Even though the boys came from many clubs, on Sunday's they played for Sutherland and were proud doing so.
The team of up-and-coming champions were:
Jack Thorne (Captain): It was a pleasure to have Jack as captain. He always led by example and lifted the boys when needed. He was exceptional with the ball, taking crucial wickets when required. He led the batting and bowling stats, and took control in the field as captain by setting fielding positions and encouraging his team. An excellent year.
Joel Drury (Vice Captain): As vice captain, Joel, along with Josh, helped Jack with setting the strategies for the team. Joel has a good cricketing brain and this helped ease the team through their first year. With the bat, Joel was put into a number of tough situations where things didn't always go his way. In our final game he helped us see out our overs, ensuring we had a competitive total.
Josh Horner (Vice Captain): Josh was dynamic with all aspects of his game this year. With the ball he was very quick, keeping the batsmen on the back foot, and always being difficult to play. His batting improved as the year went on, culminating in a great innings in the last game. In the field, he consistently restricted runs with feats only Josh could do.
Joel Almond: With both bat and ball, Joel showed the promise of developing into a very good rep cricketer. Coming off a tough introduction in the trial, Joel worked hard to remove his occasional loose ball to became by season end one of our top liners. In the field Joel excelled, putting his body on the line.
Joey Cox: As our keeper and opening batsman, Joey had a big ask this season. He did without missing a beat. His keeping was amazing, taking 8 catches including one that shouldn't happen by a boy his age. As an opener, he never left any questions unanswered, taking charge and pushing the runs.
Angus Fallins: It's always handy to have a left hand bowler, especially when they are as talented as Angus. He was unlucky not to take more wickets, but his strength was that his bowling was tough to score from. He bowled in a number of high pressure situations and handled it like a pro.
Mathew Griffiths: As our spinner, Mathew could always be called on to mixed it up. His highlight was the 4 wickets he picked up in our first game just as it was starting to slip away. With the bat, Mathew played the innings of his life against the eventual finalist to get us within a whisker.
Joshua Johnston: One of our top line batters, Josh showed his class across a number of innings. He kept the score moving along through a wide selection of shots. The coach could always breathe a little easy knowing that Josh was at the crease.
Jarrod Mazurkiewicz: Playing up a year didn't stop Jarrod looking like he belongs. As an opener, he helped see off the top line bowlers to give our talented stroke players a chance. Excellent technique will serve him well in the future.
Henry McCray: Our Mr Fix-it. If something needed done, Henry was on hand to do it. All-round skills helped Henry excel when given the opportunity. He was instrumental in a number of our wins, with either bat or ball. A stand out in the field, including an amazing catch in slips.
Dylan Smith: Playing up a year, Dylan showed his class with the ball. Giving the opposition a year's head start might faze some, but not Dylan. He bowled with excellent pace ending the season with the team's best strike rate taking a wicket every 17 balls.
Aolei Yu: Easily the most reliable and dependable bowler in the team. Aolei could drop the ball on a twenty cent piece at will. His accuracy was outstanding, ensuring he was tough to score off, with a third of his overs being maidens. In the field Aolei was outstanding, quick with excellent hands.
I would like to thank our manager, Michael McCray, for his tireless efforts this year, and for being on hand when I had to sound out some ideas. To the moms, your afternoon teas were easily the best on offer, with Vicki leading the effort. Thank you to the Thorne family for the lovely gift for each of the players, it was truly appreciated by all. The team has the potential to win the competition and I wish you all the best of luck for the future.

Watson Shield
Season 2007/08
Team
- Mark Andersson, Matthew Burg, Patrick Chapman, Jordan Duncan, Reetwik Kar, Nicholas Lardner, Ryan Marlow, Nicholas McCarthy, Andrew McRae, Mark Rice, John Watson, Connor Wright
Despite only two wins for the season, we were more than competitive. It was a very tough draw, with two of the teams St George and South Eastern, finishing equal first on top of the table.
Round 1 v Georges River St George. Due to rain the match was switched to a synthetic pitch. The pitch could be dried, but the run-ups were dangerous. Following a short delay, we were forced to bowl. A great bowling effort by the team, considering the quicks had to have restricted run-ups, saw St George dismissed for a small total. It was a good start with the bat, but too slow at the top. The middle order pushed the runs, but the fall of a few wickets saw the team 6 runs short of a win, despite facing 3 more overs than our opponents.
Round 2 v Illawarra. A gritty batting performance produced our first ton in Rep cricket! Unfortunately the team decided to bat on a pitch that had been covered for 4 days of rain. We lost our top & middle order very quickly to unplayable balls. After surviving the first 15 overs, when the pitch started to play true, Mark Andersson went on to score a century, with only Andrew McRae contributing any other runs. Some tight bowling and good fielding restricted Illawarra on what was now a good batting strip. They managed to pass our total with only an over to spare.
Round 3 v Canterbury West. Some great batting by Connor Wright and Ryan Marlow, who top scored not-out, put the team in a very strong position. A super 50 by Mark Rice took the game away from the opposition. All of the bowlers tied Canterbury West down, refusing to give up all but a handful of runs. It was Matt Burg though who destroyed them by taking 6 wickets in a great display of leg spin.
Round 4 v South Eastern. A great day at the magnificent Coogee Oval. South Eastern had a very strong batting lineup, but we were able to restrict the runs. Taking wickets was difficult against a team that was batting very well. A couple of incredible run outs by Mark Rice lifted the spirits. South Eastern also bowled exceptionally well. Unfortunately despite a number of our batsmen getting a start, including Nick McCarthy at the top, they were unable to go on with it. We did have some good fortune with the opposition dropping a number of simple catches and showing some substandard fielding. We fell 34 runs short with Andrew McRae once again the not out batsman; however the gap could have been greater if they had held their catches. At the end of the day, Sutherland batted, bowled and fielded extremely well but were beaten by a better all round team.
Round 5 v Northern District. Although not the team's best batting performance, it was enough to gain a win. A good start by Nick McCarthy and Ricky Kar followed by a fine 50 by Matt Burg, then aided by some good hitting from Pat Chapman provided us with a defendable total. Unfortunately, Northern Districts continued to struggle in the comp with only two players making double figures. Again the bowling was excellent with Andrew McRae and Nick Lardner, who bowled very quickly, taking 4 wickets each.
Although winning only two games, we should have picked up the points in two more. This was the best rep team we had fielded, and some unfortunate injuries to Nick Lardner and Jordan Duncan meant we were often without our strongest team. All of the new players to the team proved to be assets. For example, it was great to see John Watson train so hard and win the opening bowling spot. He bowled superbly and without a great deal of luck. Thanks also to Michael Grant who filled in ably for most of our games.
Thanks again to Tom Croucher and Ian McRae for their time, and for their patient coaching. The guys all trained hard and had fun at the same time. It was great again to see involvement from the Grade club.
Once again thanks to all the parents. I could not have asked for a more supportive and involved group of people.
Finally congratulations to everyone in the team, it was an absolute pleasure being involved with such a talented and committed group of young cricketers.

Weblin Shield
Season 2007/08
Team
- Martin Henry, Duncan Hunt, Brett Johnson, Nathan Loder, Barton Lynch, Brandon McLean, Sean Mulally, Dylan Smith, Daniel Thomas, Adam Thorogood, Mitchell Vassallo, Greg Wissam
The new season saw us welcome Brandon Mclean and Mitchell Vassallo to the team. Once again our trial matches versus GRP St George and Canterbury West's showed good early form and signs that we would be more than competitive in a tough draw in our 5 round matches.
Rnd 1 v GRP St George. Having held our opponents to a tight finish in our trial match we felt competitive going into this Rnd 1 match. St George won the toss and batted first slowly building momentum as they went. Tight bowling by our openers Dylan Smith and Martin Henry kept them honest until the change. Greg Wissam then got the first wicket but our opponents showed patience and slowly built their score until the introduction of our spinners Duncan Hunt (2/39) and Sean Mulally slowed them down. Further changes then brought a few more wickets but St George finished with 7/259. Into bat we went and a good opening partnership of 52, Nathan Loder (21) and Dylan Smith (65) saw a good platform built but St George bowled tight and a procession of batsman returned to the pavilion. Adam Thorogood (21) and Brett Johnson (31) the only ones to go on with it, saw us all out 179.
Rnd 2 v Newcastle. Road trip and the boys were fired up and after winning the toss into bat we went. Dylan Smith (126) and Duncan Hunt (12) laid the foundations of our innings. The Newcastle bowlers had no answer to our batting and with Daniel Thomas (35) and Adam Thorogood (66) taking the attack apart we finished with a solid 3/260 at the 60th. Into the field we went and the first wicket fell in the first over, we bowled well to hold the runs. Newcastle then fought back until Sean Mulally (3/33) and Dylan Smith (3/28) cleaned them up and Newcastle found the going tough until we bowled them out in 51st over 10/177 and finally we showed our true form. Highlights were definitely Dylan's 126 and Nathan Loder's 5 dismissals as keeper well supported by the rest of the team.
Rnd 3 v Penrith. Winning the toss we decided to have a bat, a procession of wickets fell with no one showing respect to the bowling. Barton Lynch (19), Brandon McLean (30) and Martin Henry (22) were the only players to get starts and we finished with 9/135. Into the field we went and good tight bowling kept the scoring slow 2/35 at the 20th. Penrith then put together a few partnerships but the wickets started to fall 4/70 at the 35th and we were still in the game. Penrith dug in and although we tried everything we just couldn't get the wickets and Penrith 6/137 in the 54th over. Brett Johnson (3/24) the pick of the bowlers.
Rnd 4 v Parramatta. Winning the toss we went into bat, 4/35 at the 25th and we were in trouble. A great partnership between Adam Thorogood (55) and Brandon McLean (41) had us back on track and with Brett Johnson (26) we eventually ended all out 173. Parramatta started well and showed patience in building their innings.3/62 at the 22nd over and we were still in the game. Some very good fielding from Mitchell Vassallo and Barton Lynch coupled with good tight bowling held Parramatta until tea. Unfortunately the Parramatta batsman then unleashed and took the game to us running out winners in the 51st over 6/174.
Rnd 5 v Central Coast. Our second road trip and we were fired up for the last match of the series. Put into bat we started well with a 42 run opening partnership Mitchell (21) and Duncan (30) laid a good platform for the innings. Dylan (36) and Adam (40) were the only batsman to go on with it. We ended our innings at 8/177 in the 60th. Into the field we went and very tight bowling from Greg Wissam and Brett Johnson had us holding Central Coast 1/29 at the 10th and 3/39 at the 20th. Sean Mulally and Daniel Thomas kept the pressure on and at Tea we had them 3/61 and struggling. At this stage we were hit by what one can only call a Monsoonal downpour and the game was abandoned with the game awarded to us on run rate.
While this season didn't see us achieve our goals and with most boys understanding they did not play to their potential, there was however some very positive signs for the future.
Bob and I would like to thank those parents who helped with the weekly chores and help make game day run smoothly and for once again providing the best afternoon teas in Sydney, the comments do keep coming!
Boys, we have one more year in Junior Reps and lets make it our best in season 2008/09
Have a good break and we look forward to seeing you all next season.
Brad Loder and Bob Manning.

Moore Shield
Season 2007/08
Team
- Ryan Almond, Bryce Coles-Sinclair, Joel D'Imperio, Jordan Dow, Ben Dwarshuis, Matthew Hobden, Harrison Irvine, Jack Jameson, Hayden Morton, Nicholas Panich, Shayne Smith, Adam Whatley
Welcome to Harrison Irvine and Matthew Hobden who joined the Moore Shield team this season. Ten players from the competition winning 2006-07 DCA Gee Shield team would now unite with our new team members to take on the U14 Moore Shield competition.
Round 1 vs Fairfield Liverpool. Our first game we were hosted at Fairfield Liverpool's field at Mounties. There had been a lot of overnight rain and although the ground was like a bowling green there were still damp areas in the out field. Our bowlers struggled to stop the opposition's aggressive batting and although we were able to take seven valuable catches Fairfield Liverpool finished on 7/240 after the 60 overs. This would be our only loss after our batsmen provided catching practice with 9 wickets falling to catches. The innings lasted only 40 overs before we were dismissed all out for 137. M. Hobden 3/37, J. D'Imperio 2/34, H. Irvine 1/20, J. Dow 34 & 3 catches, B. Dwarshuis 18, B. Coles-Sinclair 13.
Round 2 vs South Eastern. On our home ground of Heathcote Oval we were able to produce an outstanding bowling performance which saw our old foe dismissed without much resistance. In the 40th over South Eastern's innings was over for the sum of only 48 runs. The loss of the toss would be a normal occurrence which would see us bat second regularly. But it was "a steady she goes" attitude that provided our first win after only loosing one wicket. R. Almond 5/8, H. Morton 3/8, J. D'Imperio 23no, S Smith 16no.
Round 3 vs Manly Warringah. This would be the re-match of last season's Gee Shield semi final. With the opposition electing to bat first on the thick carpet of Heathcote Oval we were able to produce some tight fielding and disciplined bowling which restricted the run rate to 2 runs an over for the innings. This would give us a total of 123 to chase after the lunch break. Again our top order batsmen provided some great running between the wickets which saw the total being reached after 47 overs with only the loss of 2 wickets. M. Hobden 2/14, H. Morton 2/17, J. D'Imperio 2/19 & 53no, B. Coles-Sinclair 2/1, H. Irvine 1/11, A. Whatley 16, S. Smith 48.
Round 4 vs Bankstown. A quick trip across the Georges River to Revesby to play on a field that was slower and thicker than Heathcote. This was one of the few times we batted first and we were determined to put a big total on the board. It was hard going but with some great running between the wickets the run rate soon was 2.5 an over. There were some good partnerships forged during the innings but nothing topped our first 6 hit by Hayden. The score was a respectable 7/163 at the conclusion of the 60 overs. It was a good day in the field with catches all round to dismiss the Bankstown batsmen. It was a good team effort with the wickets being distributed amongst five of the bowlers. We were able to put the opposition under pressure with them failing to pass the follow on score and having to bat for another innings. They amassed 79 runs in the first innings and were 5/34 in the second before the umpires called time for the day. A. Whatley 11 & 2/2, J. D'Imperio 45, B. Dwarshuis 63no, H. Morton 30, M. Hobden 2/10, N. Panich 4/5, S.Smith 2/11, H. Irvine 1/5.
Round 5 vs Illawarra. We won the toss and on the wet dewy grass of Heathcote Oval we forced the opposition to bat first. It was a superb effort in the field and with great field placements we were able to catch out 9 of the wickets. Although it took nearly 12 overs to get the first wicket there were no substantial partnerships from the Illawarra batsmen and the innings was over during the 50th over with a modest 99 runs. Again our batting lineup performed with military precision and we were able to keep the runs flowing throughout the innings. With the loss of only 3 wickets the opposition's total was passed comfortably after 39 overs. N. Panich 2/8, J. D'Imperio 3/25, J. Jameson 1/18, A. Whatley 2/2 & 38, B. Dwarshuis 25no, H. Morton 15no.
Our overall performance was good and winning 4 out of the 5 games was a tremendous achievement and resulted in us being positioned in 3rd place on quotient out of the 19 teams. Thanks to Joe D'Imperio for all his help as team manager and to all the parents for their support and help with scoring and setup of the field. Special thanks to Rhonda Panich for co-ordinating the home game afternoon teas.

Gee Shield
Season 2007/08
Team
- Ryan Agar, Jarryd Biviano, Jamie Brown, Nicholas Chamberlain, Sam Cooke, Brendan Drury, Nathan Ellis, Jonathan Haslam, Satyaki Kar, Hayden McLean, Emmanuel Shewan, Hayden Smith
This past season the Gee shield welcomed new additions in Sam Cooke, Jonathan Haslam and Saty Kar, as well as the coaching staff. The team was introduced to a martial arts instructor, a professional who extracted many moans and groans in a very informative introduction to advanced warm-ups. Thanks Nathan.
The two trial matches resulted in a 10 wicket/final over win against GRP St George and a comprehensive win against Canterbury/Wests. These wins certainly set the scene for an expectant season. A great effort from Hayden Smith chalking up his maiden century and a dominating one at that against Canterbury/Wests also Jamie Brown with back to back fifties in both trials. The team appeared a quality outfit and looked keen to prove it.
Without winning a toss in the four rounds (sorry Hayden the bye doesn't count) we reached the semi-final with quality cricket. Our batting proved we could chase and pass good totals apart from the Manly/Warringah game, chasing 145 we capitulated for 99 in a batting innings of easy outs, thankfully our bowlers won the day which ultimately saw us through to a semi-final position.
Regardless of ability fate is fickle and for successive years these boys suffered. In the semi-final where rain was expected we again lost the toss and bowled first, a good option in case of a reduced over rate match. At 1-19 off 12 after drying the surface a second downpour doomed our campaign. The boy's swan diving in deep puddles after the game epitomized what sport is all about, team blending, wet or dry.
Kerrie Smith our manager did an outstanding job, your efficient updates and hard work was second to none, thanks for an outstanding effort. To the afternoon tea experts and B.B.Q. chefs, thanks for the extra kilos. The team had many helpers in scorers, marker boundary riders and others who contributed to the team's management thus making our job all that easier.
The Boys: The reason were here! The win against the highly fancied Central Coast to reach the semi was a fitting tribute to your diligence and camaraderie. As coaching staff we could not ask for more. It was a pleasure to be associated with a fine team of young men on and off the field, giving us many humorous and cherished moments. Again Hayden Smith led the team with imagination and flair and always lifted the side with his brilliant fielding, outstanding skipper. Congratulations again boys on an exceptional season.
Thank you to the association again for your support, especially Greg Thomas and Tony Gleeson for your tireless efforts.

Cawsey Shield
Season 2007/08
Team
- Adam Burg, Cameron Burgess, Harrison Chapman, Daniel Fallins, Ethan Grinham, Ross Hickman, Jesse McPhee, Matthew Saunders, Trent Smith, Nick Swanson, Benjamin Williams, Jack Wood
This series was just about a repeat of 2006-07. Losing the first game makes it a very hard task to qualify for the semi finals. The lads played competitively in almost every game and can be proud of their efforts, finishing 6th out of 20 teams and against some very good cricketers.
We were outplayed in our first game against South Eastern (2006-07 Winners). These guys did everything better than us and showed why they won the league the previous year. Needing only 91, South Eastern reached the total without loss in the 27th over and we at home by 5pm! Not a great start but things definitely got better.
A solid win against Newcastle got the lads back on track and this was followed up by another good win against Hawkesbury. Still with a faint hope of qualifying, we travelled to the picturesque ground at Camden. While the ground looked fantastic (although the flies were extremely persistent) the outfield was far too thick for good cricket. Facing the best opening attack of the series we fought hard to reach 92 with no boundaries being hit. Our total was passed in the 47th over, but not before showing great fighting spirit to stay in the game and almost bringing off a great win.
The final game against Central Coast was another close one. Ethan and Trent dominated the innings and in reply our bowlers kept Central Coast behind the run rate all the time thanks to tight bowling.
The lads (and parents) all got on very well throughout the series and were a very loyal and supportive bunch, which is great. As we all know cricket tests character as much as skill and these young lads showed they are developing into fine young men. It was especially pleasing that the Sutherland boys did not engage in any of the needless banter and sledging that we experienced playing other teams. They were there to congratulate their team mates for their successes and give them a pat on the back when they failed, which is as important.
The side was captained very well by Ethan who is developing into a strong leader and by the final part of the series stamped his authority on the game with his skippering and not just his batting. It is a very tough job without a coach on the field to assist, but Ethan managed this task well and in later games had developed his skippers' instinct and was backing his judgement. Ethan was well supported by Trent who also set the standard in the field and kept the boys focussed.
From in individual perspective, Nick Swanson improved every week behind the stumps; has a wonderful pair of soft hands and quick feet. Nick can be proud of his first year of representative cricket. Ben and Matt bowled well and Jack has added a yard of pace this year which is good to see. Dan, Jesse and Adam provided the wrist spin and all performed very well at different stages during the series. Ethan was the dominant batsman in the competition and has a bright future ahead of him. Two half centuries and a 46 is a fantastic effort in a 5 game series. Jack Wood also stepped up this year and batted very well in the middle order while Trent was consistent at the top. Our fielding was generally good; Dan Fallins taking several excellent catches in the gully that U12 boys have no right to take!
Finally, thanks to Darren Smith for coaching the lads and to the parents who scored, ferried, fed and counselled the boys during the series. Well done again and maybe next series we can win the first game!

Creak Shield
Season 2007/08
Team
- Brendan Curtis, Casey Grimes, Brayden Heffernan, Jacob Heffernan, Justin Hess, Lachlan Hess, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Marciante, Jackson Nicholls, John-Paul Pavia, Dylan Rae, Alexander Roberts
During the summer we watched 12 individuals develop and mature into one close-knit team that would do anything for their teammates.
Peter Schofield with the assistance of Bill Johnson coached and mentored the boys into a well-disciplined, respectful and improving cricket team. Peters' goal for the season was to have the boys become better cricketers and young men at the end of the season from when they started.
To the boys credit this was achieved and the bond between the 12 players was a joy to experience. Overall the season was a success with the boys winning 5 of their 7 games with everyone contributing. The boys displayed fantastic passion and enthusiasm at every training session and game. They were eager to learn from Peter and BJ about all aspects of the game both on and off the field and supported each other thru out the season.
I believe I can speak on behalf of the coaches and parents by saying we are proud of the ways the boys conducted themselves thru out the season displaying all aspects of sportsmanship during the summer.
As a team, our bowling and fielding was as good as any of our opposition in the competition. The boys competed for the 50 overs no matter whatever the position of the game and their efforts in the field won us a number of the games.
Whilst our batting as a team was inconsistent, we had a number of good individual performances and partnerships thru out the season. Captain Brendon Curtis led the way with the bat, ball and in the field but was backed up by his 11 teammates.
Overall, the boys showed great improvement each game and will be better cricketers from their experiences. The bond between the boys continue and is evident at club games with the continue mateship, sportsmanship and respective for each other.
On behalf of the boys and coaches, we would like to thank all the parents that helped in transporting the boys, providing tents, scoring, afternoon teas, team bbq's and more importantly supporting their children thru the summer. It is much appreciated by all the boys and coaches.

Watson Shield
Season 2006/07
Team: Dennis Pendergast (Coach), Ben Marciante, Dylan Dule, Daniel Ward, Matthew Ritchie, Andrew Herne, Peter Ward (Manager), William Del Din, Michael Sharkey, Mitchell Floyd, Alec Judd (c), Grant Johnson, Thomas Aggett, Daniel Saunders.
After the frustration of the previous Weblin Shield season the boy's final year in junior cricket was to be one of redemption. Our Watson Shield team was back to full strength and keen to prove it.
Again Alec Judd with William Del Din, an exceptional deputy ably led the team. A notable addition to the team was Grant Johnson a fine all rounder and experienced representative player from Illawarra.
After two good wins in the trial games our confidence in the season proper could be well justified.
Round One saw us hosts against Central Coast, a side we accounted for well in last years campaign. In an ill-tempered game that was eventually washed out, I can only commend our lads for their discipline in not being baited to their level of aggression.
Sutherland 2-55 drew with Central Coast 7-166
A. Judd 23, G. Johnson 22. D. Dule 3-27 & B. Marciante 2-28.
Round Two saw us in a great comeback win against Canterbury/West's. After a top order batting collapse our tail wagged giving us a good total even on the tiny Bland oval. Our bowlers proved far too strong for our opponents with 100 being the difference.
Sutherland 9-225 def Canterbury/West's 125
M. Ritchie 43, M. Floyd 25, W. Del Din 54*, D. Ward 32* (last wicket
partnership of 75 unfinished) D. Dule 2-29, D. Saunders 3-20, A. Herne
2-4.
At this point in the competition the boys aided by their new team victory song started to really believe in themselves. From this game they had self-belief and a will to achieve their potential. Our opponents in the remaining rounds to the finals never matched this enthusiasm.
Round Three at Tonkin against the highly rated Camden only brought out the best in the team. Camden boasting a side of star-studded grade players was possibly the team to beat, at least on paper. Again batting first our top order excelled with six of the first seven contributing good scores, this after us losing a wicket on the very first ball of the game. Their chase of 253 was never on and at 7-85 we were thinking of polishing up a new rock for the outright. Alas cricket being what it is saw the Camden boys regroup and extend their total to 168. Our best win thus far played in the best of spirit.
Sutherland 253 def Camden 168
B. Marciante 37, M. Sharkey 25, T. Aggett 43, D. Dule 26, M. Floyd 36,
W. Del Din 31. D. Dule 3-36, D. Saunders 2-23, A. Herne 3-23.
Round Four and torrential rain saw us transferred to the synthetic surface at Hassell Park on the leafy North Shore. Again our batsmen dominated in a 57 over reduced game. After a great second wicket partnership of 119, all incoming boys unselfishly threw the bat at everything. Our 7-232 on a lush outfield was a daunting task for our Northerners. At 9-153 we relaxed and enjoyed the moment a little sharing a few overs. Our total was never in danger and a 40 run victory resulted.
Sutherland 232 def North Shore 193
G. Johnson 78, B. Marciante 66, D. Dule 30*. D. Saunders 2-24, W. Del
Din 3-40.
Round Five and on our premier ground Caringbah, Hornsby batted out their overs for 9-211 on a beautiful track. In the process of scoring 88 their opening batsman ran out three of his partners before he also succumbed to his own bad judgment, his own fourth victim! Losing a few quick wickets early we settled down to some great cricket with the winning run coming in the 57th over with a "zac" over the mid-wicket boundary. Talk about a way to finish No1 in our division and first on quotient overall and minor premiers.
Sutherland 3-213 def Hornsby/Ku-ring-gai Hills 211
A. Judd 56, M. Sharkey 90*, M. Ritchie 50*. D. Dule 2-50.
Semi-Final v Central Coast. Back to
Sutherland against Central Coast (eventual premiers) once more. Batting
first we found the wicket two paced and the runs were slow coming while
the Coast bowlers took advantage with good bowling changes. Our
moderate score wasn't enough with their batsmen digging in well to
achieve a convincing win. At no time did we surrender and the
opposition had to take the game from us.
Sutherland 147 Lost to Central Coast 4-149
M. Sharkey 43, G. Johnson 37. W. Del Din 2-21.
THE BOYS: It has been a great joy for me over the past three seasons to be associated with such a fine team of young men. Whilst your cricket ability can be measured in your achievements, stats fail to show the splendid camaraderie and your obvious enjoyment of the game that moulded the team into a very fine unit. Congratulations on a great cricket season. Speaking personally your friendship has given me wonderful memories and humorous moments I shall always cherish. I wish you every success and enjoyment for your senior years in this wonderful game.
Thanks again to Peter Ward our manager for his dedicated and tireless work. Again the parent brigade with scoring duties and afternoon teas which were always second to none. Thanks again to the Junior Cricket Association, especially Michael Mooney, Tom Croucher and Greg Thomas for their great backup.
Dennis Pendergast.
Weblin Shield
Season 2006/07
Team: Michael Nash (Coach), Nathan Woellner, Matthew Burg, Dylan Nash, Connor Wright, David McMahon, Craig Wright (Manager), Ryan Marlow, Sam Newman, Shane Te Patu, Kurt Bollard, Mark Andersson, Andrew McRae, Mark Rice.
Despite only one win for the season, this was our most competitive season yet. The team performed very well in both of the trial games, boosting team confidence for the competition games to come.
Round 1 v Camden. An outstanding unbeaten opener's knock contributed half the runs to the total of 164 all out. The bowling was tight and the team continued to pick up wickets. Unfortunately we couldn't pick up the last 4 wickets and Camden put on 50 runs in the last 10 overs, passing our score in the 49th over to win the match.
Round 2 v South Eastern. A brilliant batting performance almost producing our first ton, saw the team bat out the 60 overs to reach 7-243. This should have been enough to gain our first points for the season. Our traditional rival strung together a fine team batting effort to take home the points in the 59th over with one wicket in hand. A great game and one that got away.
Round 3 v Central Coast. Following the great batting from the previous round, we were looking again for a strong hit out. 116 runs in 60 overs was not going to win any points. Central Coast needed only 30 overs to complete the chase, losing only two wickets. This was the teams only real flogging for the season.
Round 4 v Hornsby. In a rain reduced match we set a competitive total. Strong but slow batting partnerships by Hornsby saw any even game, up until some great bowling and poor shot selections chasing quick runs, gave us our first points of the season.
Round 5 v Newcastle. After 23 overs, Newcastle was 6-72, with the help of a 101 run partnership our opponents posted a 200+ score. The Sutherland team worked hard for its runs, but fell 38 runs short.
What made this season so impressive was that our half of the draw contained all of the top teams. Although only winning 1 game, another 2 games were there for the taking. The finals teams were not determined until the last round. As in previous years we showed that the team was the best fielding side in the competition. Our batting also produced its best results with individual scores of 97, 84no, 62, 60, 41, 40.
Thanks again to Michael Nash for his determined and patient coaching. Training venues were sometimes unavailable and Michael and the boys adapted well. It was also great to see the involvement from the Grade club, and we hope for more input next year - it is something the team really looks forward to.
Once again thanks to all the parents. I could not ask for a more supportive and involved group of people.
Finally congratulations to everyone in the team. I hope to see
everyone back next year so that we can go that one step further and
make the finals.

Moore Shield
Season 2006/07
Team: Brad Loder (Manager), Barton Lynch, Dylan Smith, Adam Thorogood, Brett Johnson, Martin Henry, Bob Manning (Coach), Duncan Hunt, Matthew Brogan, Addison Grinham, Nathan Loder, Greg Wissam, Daniel Thomas, Sean Mulally.
The new season welcomed a new Coach in Bob Manning and with it new players Martin Henry, Sean Mulally and Mathew Brogan. Our two trial matches showed glimpses of early form and the boys keen to do well for their new coach.
Rnd 1 v GRP St George: After giving our opponents a run for their money in a preseason trial, we went into this match with high expectations against one of the most consistent teams over the last four years. Winning the toss we elected to bat. Our openers seemed to handle the opening attack but were soon dispatched and a procession of batsmen then followed. The only resistance came from Barton Lynch (33) all out 94.
Into the field we went fired up by a 'pep" talk by the Coach. Unfortunately we seemed to leave it in the dressing room with our bowling allowing GRP St George to score at will and run away with the match. The best of the bowling saw our new team mate Martin Henry dig deep with Daniel Thomas labouring hard into a howling wind with the reward of our only wicket. St George 1/96 easy winners.
Rnd 2 v Newcastle: Road trip to Newcastle saw the team eager to make amends for their disappointing start in Rnd 1. Loss of the toss and our hosts elected to bat. We started a bit wayward and didn't really trouble the batsman but our fielding was solid. We needed wickets and wickets we got with Daniel Thomas (4/18 off 9), Sean Mulally (2/37 off 10) , Duncan Hunt (1/13 off 10) and Martin Henry (2/13 off 6) combined with great fielding, had Newcastle all out in the 57th over 10/135.
Into bat we went confidence high but not to be, 0,1,0,1 saw us in trouble early (5/33) but the ship was steadied by Dylan Smith (16) and Daniel Thomas. Then a procession of wickets saw us in trouble again, 7/80, 8 /88. Then a partnership between Daniel Thomas (51) and Greg Wissam (40) tore the heart out of the Newcastle bowling and the score ended 9/139.
Rnd 3 v Gladesville: A cautious start saw us drop a few wickets until Barton Lynch (37) and Dylan Smith put on a 93 run partnership to steady the innings, 2/102 at the 30th. Then a few more wickets fell until a 45 run partnership between Mathew Brogan (18) and Dylan saw us 5/163 at the 42nd over. We then witnessed one of the best partnerships of the year (74) with Greg Wissam (52) and Dylan taking to the bowling with controlled aggression until Dylan was out with a fine century (102). We then finished the innings at 8/271 after another great partnership (33) between Addison Grinham (19) and Martin Henry (11).
Gladesville into bat and started confidently until Daniel Thomas (4/11) with support from Dylan and Addison brought a halt to the scoring and Gladesville were 4/87 at tea. The introduction of spin saw Sean Mulally (3/23) coupled with Duncan Hunt (1/23) keep the pressure on Gladesville and all out 132.
Rnd 4 v Bankstown: Batting first, our openers Nathan Loder and Duncan Hunt saw off the opening bowlers and then a procession of wickets fell. Duncan (19), Greg Wissam (38), Brandon Mclean (12) and Barton Lynch (13) steadied the ship to help us post a very modest 10/124 a lot of work to do.
Bankstown into bat and we managed to tie them down and the wickets started to fall. Combination of tight bowling, Brett Johnson (10/1/1/19), Addison Grinham (6/1/0/14), Duncan Hunt (12/6/1/22) and Greg Wissam (4/1/0/4) with aggressive fielding saw Bankstown drop more wickets until they rallied and finished 7/127.
Rnd 5 v Camden: Last game of the season and the boys keen to make amends for the coach.
Into bat we went, starting slow but steady. Tight bowling by Camden saw us once again succumb to the pressure and wickets fell at regular intervals. Barton Lynch (13), Brandon Mclean (17) and Greg Wissam (19) were the only players to get starts with Camden cleaning us up for 90.
Camden into bat and with patience and determination they saw off all our bowlers could throw at them and passed our total in the 44th over, 1/91.
While this season didn't see us achieve our goals and with most boys understanding they did not play to their potential, there was however some very positive signs for the future. Having signed up our new coach to a "long term contract", with some hard work and dedication from the boys, next season should see a much stronger performance from a group of boys who do have the ability to mix it with the top four teams.
Once again, thanks go to those parents who helped with the
weekly chores and help make game day run smoothly and for once again
providing the best afternoon teas in Sydney, the comments do keep
coming!

The 2006/07 Rep season welcomed the new coaching staff of Head Coach Peter Schofield and Assistant Stuart Slack. A sense of professionalism was apparent from the start by the coaches. Our first game against Newcastle ensured we used up most of our luck for the season. A good win in the midst of the rain threatening to wash out the match. Fortunately, we bowled 31 overs to constitute a match, thus winning on run rate. Game 2, we travelled to Parramatta for a tough match. We set a solid total and proceeded to roll the opposition in 50 overs. Gladesville were our next opponents for game 3. Batting first, we scored our highest total for the season and amazingly bowling out Gladesville for 49. Our bitter rivals over the past two seasons (South Eastern) were the next hurdle to climb. After being dismissed for a competitive score, we routed our friends for 99. Round 5 saw us play a cross over match against Manly. Both teams were undefeated and playing for a home semi final. Great batting again setup a formidable total to chase, again the bowling and fielding was first class. A terrific win sending us roaring into the Semi's to meet Manly.
Semi finals are normally tight, tough affairs. This game was no different. Sutho gave absolutely nothing, restricting them to 9/115 after 60 overs. The Sutho batsmen handled the chase with ease 3/120 in 37 overs.
This set up a final against our neighbours Georges River St. George. It was almost a carbon copy of the semi final. Tight bowling, great fielding again restricted the visitors to 9/103 in 60 overs. This time the win was even more emphatic, the total being run down in just 33 overs, only losing two wickets. A terrific effort from this team, the first Sutherland Junior Rep side to win a premiership in any age group for 7 years. Coincidently, the last side also coached by Peter Schofield.
A huge congratulations to all the players, whose hard work and dedication to training certainly paid off. To the coaching staff, who showed what was required to go to the next level. A big thankyou to all parents, siblings and grandparents who supported the team throughout the season. I would also like to thank Rod Whatley for assisting myself to co-manage this well oiled machine.

As it was with last years Creak Shield team, I was given a very talented bunch of boys by the Selectors, to Coach. The Team was bolstered by the addition of Nicholas and Lewis as well as the natural development of the original members from last year. Being semi finalists in the Creak Shield led to realistic expectations, that with focus on key areas, we would aim to go further this Season.
The main areas we needed to develop was ensuring we build partnership's early so we can capitalize later in the Innings to ensure we amass solid totals that we can defend with our key strength....bowling and fielding. Overall we did significantly improve in this area and generally comfortably either chased totals or set scores which were not challenged. Special mention must go to our Captain, Hayden Smith who amassed an impressive 175 runs with an average of 58.33, took 11 wickets with an average of 7.27 as well as a hat trick in round 4 and Jarryd Biviano who averaged 42 coming in at the middle order. These outstanding achievements earned these boys a well deserved place in the U13 Emerging Blues squad with Hayden being named U12 NSWDCA Player of the Year. Congratulations boys, a great achievement.
However as they say, sport can be cruel at times, and as such was the Teams experience when we came up against Manly in the 2nd round of the Season. We bowled first, and whether it was nerves, or just one of those days, we unfortunately put in our worst performance in the last 2 Seasons and as such they made 187. We started slowly and looked completely gone with about 15 overs to go but an inspirational partnership by Nathan Ellis and Jarryd Biviano got us down to us needing (at the time) 1 run off the last ball to win. As it turned out we were unable to get over the line and in the final wrap up actually lost the game and in the end the chance to play in the Finals.
As the boy's move on with their cricketing careers, I hope they learn from this year's experiences and realise that every run counts, and you need to really perform consistently to be the best. It wasn't a very fair lesson when considering the overall ease with which we accounted for every other Team we faced, but for those of the boy's fortunate enough to continue in the Gee Shield, I'm sure they won't let it happen again.
In conclusion I would sincerely like to thank all the Parents who ensured that the boy's were on time, ready to listen and learn, and full of the right attitude. It made my job extremely enjoyable and memorable. To Kerrie, once again thanks for the outstanding job you did for the Team, and to all the Parents who help with the Scoring, setting up the Field and the best afternoon tea in the competition, many thanks. Lastly thanks to the boy's....you are all extremely talented...have fantastic attitudes....and an amazing Team spirit....and with a bit more grit and determination, will be extremely hard to beat in 2007/08

As the coach of this side I personally witnessed how 12 small boys could change how they played cricket at club level to how they could match their skills against Sydney's finest at the representative level. These boys grew in stature and self belief like no other side I have coached before.
They valued instruction, developed commitment and wanted to improve in everyway.
They were a credit and a testament to their committed mums and dads. For their first year out in the representative scene they secured 5th position, missing out only on quotient for the semi finals.
Out of 7 games for the season (including trials against St George and Illawarra) we only lost one game. Each game we played after our first round loss to St George (who went to the final), we became more disciplined and mature. We beat comprehensively the next 4 sides which included, Penrith, Camden, Blacktown and Parramatta.
Great highlights of bowling, fielding, keeping and batting were displayed by ALL the boys involved.
The sportsmanship, passion and compassion this team showed to team members and their opponents was overwhelming. Something I am sure they will take through their representative cricket career, and hopefully further. Also the friendships they formed in this short time with each other, I'm sure, will last all their lives. A guide in how well they enjoyed the season will be how many turn up to trial next year. I am sure they will all be there with bells on.
First and foremost I would like to thank all the Taxi drivers (the parents and grand parents) for taking their children all around the shire and the Sydney metropolitan area.
Second I would like to thank the parents (mostly the mums) for their tireless efforts in the canteens with afternoon teas and drinks. Which I am sure was Jenny Craig approved! A superb job!
Especially, the BBQ's for brecky! etc. A BIG THANK YOU to parents who helped putting up the tarps and shelters, especially on windy and rainy days. Finally, thanks to Luke and Jenny McPhee for managing the team. Your support and encouragement was outstanding throughout the rep season. We had many a laugh and I enjoyed your company.

A hectic season of cricket with players involved in the SSJCA competition plus Watson and Green Shield, CHS State competitions, Sutherland Grade and Emerging Blues. A measure of the talent of the individuals and the achievements they have obtained. The strength of the Watson Shield team is, however, the comradeship and team spirit of the players and the positive way they approach their cricket. They always have respect for each other, their supporters and their opponents and in tight situations are able to rise to the occasion as a team. In fact those that have competed at a higher level still enjoy the bond that exists in the Watson Shield side.
With this in mind I can only wish them well in the future and hope that they all continue to enjoy their cricket. Sadly the SSJCA must part with a group of young men who over a number of years have represented the association with distinction. They have risen from not winning a game in Foster Shield to participating in the Weblin and Watson Shield finals in the last two years. They did not win either which was unfortunate as they have the talent and it was probably unjust to lose both. 42
I would like to thank Bob Manning for coaching the side again this year and as a non parent putting in many hours with the team. I'm sure that players and parents alike appreciate your efforts and it is more than likely that these young men will seek you out on the hill at Caringbah Oval in the future, as you have alluded to, as you have gained their respect with the way you have assisted them on and off the field.
I would also like to thank all the parents who helped with so many of the jobs over the years. Just the usual things like scoring, drinks preparation, afternoon tea, marking fields, retrieving covers... the list is endless but without your help the players would not have been able to enjoy playing as much as they have. You have all created a positive environment that has supported the team in many ways and provided the basis for their success.

Dennis Pendergast (Coach), Harry Robbins (Coach), Peter Ward (Manager).
The results of our boys in this depleted year may not appear flattering with only win from three encounters, but we performed far better than cold hard statistics show. The two trial games resulted in encouraging wins against highly fancied sides where all boys were given opportunities to impress on their introduction to turf pitches. Subsequently both these strong teams, North Shore and Georges River/St George advanced to the semi-finals.
- Trial 1. Sutherland 5-193, def Georges River/St George 10-189. (D. Dule 50 ret, & 5-39, A. Judd 39, B. Marciante 39* M. Sharkey 29, D. Ward 2-27 & M. Floyd 3-32).
- Trial 2. Sutherland 11-141, defeated North Shore 11-119. (T. Aggett 59, D. Ward 2- 11, A. Herne 3-10. L. Hooper 2-14, W. Del Din 3-9 & B. Daenell (wk) 2 catches. * Note- the only time we were bowled out in the season!
- R/1 v Bankstown. Our quicks drew first blood and at 4-66 we were giggling until their middle order ran riot, adding 141 in quick time. With mid off almost in the Catholic section and our sweepers chasing leather everywhere Sutherland cemetery was certainly well protected! Their 7-272 was a daunting chase. On always a crumbling second innings Sutherland wicket our 7-193 was a real credit to our boys. Bankstown 7-272 defeated Sutherland 7-193. (M. Sharkey 33, M. Ritchie 46*, D. Ward 2-26, & L. Hooper 3-38).
- R/2 was an away game to Fairfield-Liverpool on a good track and almost new oval. From 3-11 our middle order consolidated and our 8-187 set them a formidable chase. A chase they passed in the final over with two wickets in hand, an absolute thriller that reversed the result from last season's thriller. Fairfield-Liverpool 8-189 defeated Sutherland 8-187. (M. Sharkey 64*, D. Dule 41 & 5-21, D. Ward 2-36 & B. Daenell (wk) 2 catches.
- R/3. v South Eastern. Washed Out.
- R/4. Bye.
- R/5's away game against Central Coast's more than confident team (again cold hard stats as I stated previously) saw them assume they were a mere formality of taking the points after our two losses. Not so! On the picturesque, postage stamp size Taylor Park our northerners provided us with a beautiful track. Our bowlers mixed the Gosford salt air with Sutherland fire and although their last wicket added 34 runs their 151 total was never in doubt and we passed them in a well-calculated chase in the 58th over with five wickets in hand. A truly fine win and smiles on all Sutho faces that two hours journey home could not erase.Sutherland 5-157 defeated Central Coast 151. (B. Marciante 51, M. Sharkey 41, M. Ritchie 35*, D. Dule 3-35, A. Herne 3-20, A. Judd 2-5 & T. Aggett (wk) 3 catches.
As well as being a talented team of boys, equally and if not more importantly Harry and I both agree a fine team of lads who enjoy and love their cricket and encourage their team mates for better things. Backed up with parents who only wish to contribute to the team success certainly made our involvement very enjoyable. Again Alec Judd our skipper and his deputy Daniel Ward led the side with flair and imagination well beyond their years. Congratulations again to all the boys in playing the game hard and always fair - this will only enhance your appreciation of this great game in future years. Again thanks to all the parents who provided the afternoon teas, as always worth waiting for. My wife Barbara (Mrs Pendo), Jenny Ward and Jane and Bridget (Ben's younger sister) Marciante thanks for the extra work in preparation for the home games, just great ladies. Rod Aggett, Vin Sharkey and David Ritchie again contributed in a big way, Rod's warm up drills certainly saved us older guy's knees a little grief! Peter Ward, our manager could not have done any more in a very poorly paid position, just great Pete. My old mate Harry Robbins (the old war horse), thanks H, I know you enjoyed it as much as I did.
We again thank for the S.S.J.C.A. committee for their backing and untiring work in providing our Weblin lads the opportunity of representing Sutherland at this level.
Dennis Pendergast. Harry Robbins.

Cameron Byrom, Matthew Burg, Patrick Burns, Dylan Nash (C), Connor Wright (V/C), David McMahon, Front Row: Ryan Marlow, Mark Andersson, Kurt Bollard, Sam Newman, Nathan Woellner, Mark Rice Michael Nash (Coach), Ken Newman (Manager)
A tough year for the Moore shield side. We welcomed new players Kurt Bollard, Cameron Byrom, Nathan Woellner and David McMahon to the side, and re-welcomed Matt Burg who had some previous shield experience. Our two trial matches showed much improvement in the side from previous years. A narrow loss to St George and a very good win against North Shore had us set for the season.
- Our first game was against eventual premiers Central Coast at Carrington. Central Coast won
- Game 2 Vs Northern Districts - won by Sutherland
- Game 3 lost to Bankstown.
- Game 4 Vs Semi Finalists South Eastern. South Eastern won a tight match.
It is very hard to be satisfied after a season of just one win, but the Moore Shield team gave their all and a Coach and Manager can't ask for more than that. Well done team.
- Mark Andersson - Ando continues to improve his keeping skills, taking 6 catches this year (Ave 2.33). Top score of 17* and an average of 15.0.
- Kurt Bollard - Kurt was our strike bowler and was often unplayable. He took 4 wickets at an average of 22.25 from 28 overs. A great catch in the outfield against Bankstown.
- Matthew Burg - Burgers was undoubtedly underbowled this year through no fault of his own. Gives his leggies great flight, and always looked dangerous. A very level headed cricketer in all aspects of the game. Mat bowled 9 overs for 32 runs, & averaged 10 with the bat.
- Patrick Burns - Burnsie's 28 overs had a RPO rate of less than 2.5. He was unlucky with some decisions this year. Excellent in the field, taking 2 catches.
- Cameron Byrom - Cam was solid in the field taking 2 good catches, confusing both the coach and manager as he never ever caught one at training! His sensible batting (18*) in partnership with Ando took us to our only victory.
- Ryan Marlow - Ryan has improved his batting and ended the season with a solid 39, averaging 15.5. Very safe in the field with a good arm.
- David McMahon - David opened the batting with Dylan this year, and always looked to get on with the job. An excellent runner between the wickets. Dave surprised us with his leggies this year taking 4 wickets at 18.00, and a catch.
- Dylan Nash (C) - A new role captaining, opening the batting and bowling this year. Dylan is an exceptional young man, and a great cricketer. Top score 22, averaged 13 with the bat, and 5 wickets at 19.8. 1 catch.
- Sam Newman - Promoted to 3 in the order, Newmo averaged 15.5 with a top score of 34. He continued to bowl well, taking 6 wickets at 13.17, and 6 catches, the highlight being a great grab at 1st slip off Kurt.
- Mark Rice - Mark bowled some tight overs of offspin (RPO 2.6), and like Mat was probably underbowled. Top score of 21 at and average of 13.67. Mark took 2 catches, and has a deadly throw, effecting a number of runouts.
- Nathan Woellner - A good solid first year for Nathan. Top score of 25 at an average of 9.00 batting down the order. Unlucky not to snare a few more wickets, Nathan's bowling was always economical. 1 catch.
- Connor Wright (VC) - Top score this year of 45 at an average of 13.5, shows Blue's potential. Bowled well and took two important wickets. 2 catches.
The parents and players all thank Michael Nash, our coach this year. Mike did a stand out job, and had the boys ready and revved for every match. Well done also to the team, melded together, and were a team in every sense of the word.
I would like to thank all of the parents for doing all of the tasks that go to make up a Rep cricket season, but mostly for your never ending encouragement for the team, as well as support for Mike and me. It certainly made our jobs a lot easier - thank you - scorers, afternoon tea providers and organisers, pavilion erectors, warm up helpers, all.

After a disjointed start to our season we welcomed a new coach in Greg Thomas and 4 new players in Michael Truman, Zac Wedesweiler, Greg Wissam and Adam Thorogood. With the boys keen to repeat the success of last season we headed into the season proper confident a late start to our training would not hamper our endeavours.
- Rnd 1 Sutherland 10/73 lost to Blacktown 4/76 Winning the toss and electing to bat, our five top order batsman got starts but we were all out for 73. Our bowlers began well and we had Blacktown 4/45 at lunch. After lunch Blacktown came out with purpose and scored the required runs. A disappointing first up effort.
- Rnd 2 Sutherland 10/118 defeated Penrith 10/93 Winning the toss once again we started well with our top order making the most of their opportunities and building partnerships giving us a good foundation to go forward with. Inspired bowling by Penrith and we were all out for 118 after 53 overs. Our bowlers once again applied the pressure and kept the scoring low and with this wickets started to fall. With the build up of pressure and the need to score runs, Penrith then succumbed to our spin bowler Duncan Hunt (4/10) and were all out for 93. Inspired fielding coupled with our tight bowling was the difference in a performance that brought great praise from even the Penrith coaching staff. A very good TEAM effort.
- Rnd 3 Sutherland 9/133 lost to ACT 5/160 A cold and wet morning in Canberra greeted us. Winning the toss again our openers Nathan Loder and Duncan Hunt saw off the new ball with a good start. A couple of quick wickets saw us under pressure until Zac Wedesweiler, Daniel Thomas and Taylor Curtis held our innings intact until the end of our 60 overs - 9/133. ACT's turn to bat and we were getting on top until we let them off the hook - 4/69 at tea. After tea we fell apart with some very wayward bowling coupled with poor fielding which allowed ACT to grab hold of the match and run away with the game.
- Rnd 4 Sutherland 5/204 defeated Illawarra 9/72 We lost our first toss of the season but were grateful when asked to bat first. Once again our openers got us off to great start (84 run partnership) and the rest of our batsman followed suit taking to the Illawarra bowling with confidence - 5/204 Again our bowlers started well shutting down the Illawarra batsman to have them 1/31 in the 20th. A devastating spell from Greg Wissam (5/2/3/7), including breaking one batsman's bat, saw Illawarra under pressure 6/48 in the 35th. Continued tight bowling and inspired fielding restricted Illawarra to 9/72. A very good all round team effort.
- Rnd 5 Sutherland 5/230 defeated Hawkesbury 9/212
Electing to bat we started well once again with our entire top
order batsmen building good partnerships highlighted by Dylan Smiths
84. Our middle
order then went on with the job. Greg Wissam (44) and Zac Wedesweiler
(24) stole the
show with boundaries galore. A great effort 5/230 against a much
fancied team was a
great achievement.
Hawkesbury into bat and once again we tied them down and built the pressure 1/44 in the 20th. Hawkesbury then started to get on top, taking to our bowlers with vengeance getting to 2/131 at the 40th. Once again tight bowling coupled with good fielding slowed the scoring and with Hawkesbury chasing runs the wickets fell. We contained them at 9/212. A great win indeed against a top 5 side.
Many thanks to all the parents who helped with the 'chores' that are necessary to make a game day run smoothly which in turn allows the boys to concentrate on the job at hand.

If we were doing a report on a fishing trip, then the 2005/06 Cawsey Shield team may be the classic story of the one that got away. Sutherland fielded a team of exceptional talent. Of the four games we played, we won two and lost two. The two that we lost, we could have won, and who knows what may have happened thereafter. Never mind, that's cricket, and I'm very proud to say that these young men did themselves and Sutherland cricket proud with their sportsmanship and their never ending desire to do their best.
Round 1 vs Penrith at home. A real battle of tight bowling against determined batting ensued. Penrith ended up with 6/143 off their 50 overs. When it came to our turn to bat we only 108. Whilst the loss was disappointing, we learned some valuable lessons, and we were confident of turning things around.
Round 2, won the toss and batted. We lost a couple of quick wickets to be 2/18 after 10 overs. However, from that point forward a series of well compiled partnerships saw us reach 4/155 off our 50 overs. 50
Our bowlers had the opportunity to rip and really give it to the Illawarra boys. Illawarra hung in there, and whilst the game was always safe, to their credit they batted out their 50 overs to finish at 9/112. A strong and well deserved win to the Sutho boys. Our next match against South Eastern, won the toss and bowled. Excellent line and length bowling, backed up by some amazing catching saw our boys roll South Eastern for 93 on a ground with a quick outfield.
Unfortunately things just didn't happen with our batting - all for 72. Our last game was back home against the undefeated Parramatta. Our bowlers were reliable and consistent. Parramatta all out for a competitive, but certainly gettable, 124. We got the runs with over 5 overs to spare. A truly deserved win and a nice way to finish the season.
The 2005/06 Cawsey Shield season was one that I'm sure we have all learned from. On behalf of all involved with the team, I would like to thank Darren and Joe for the time they devoted to the team. A big thank you to the parents who supported the boys so loyally. Thanks to the dads that helped with the scoring, pitch preparation, boundary placements etc etc. To the mums who prepared the best afternoon teas by far. Finally, and most importantly, thanks to a fine group of young men. Your demeanour, and the way you supported each other was first class. There is immense talent within the squad and I sincerely hope the nucleus of the team stays together as success at shield level is there for the taking in future years.

The 2005/06 Creak Shield was a year of firsts on a lot of fronts. it was the first time 11 of the 12 boy's had played Rep Cricket , the first time the Coach had ever coached a Team and in the end we finished first in our Pool and eventually lost in the Semi Finals to the Team who came First overall.
The Season can be best described as one whereby 12 boys from 4 different Clubs came together and finished with their heads held high and as a strong Team unit. This was only possible because of the Boy's fantastic attitude to the Team and the way they wanted to contribute to the Team
Through the Season the boy's Bowling and Fielding were consistently high and in a way compensated for our Batting which could have been more patient at times. Having said this there were some really good signs with the Bat and the Boy's showed overall very good technique which is encouraging for the future.
It's important to recognise the Boy's contribution to the overall results :
- Hayden Smith - Our Captain and Leader on the Field. Hayden had a very strong Season whereby his Bowling was extremely tight and his fielding was always outstanding. In the 'must win' game against Camden he took an unbelievable outfield catch, executed two direct run outs to change the course of the game in our favour.
- Jarryd Biviano - Our rock behind the stumps. Jarryd kept for 280 overs throughout the regular Season and only conceded 22 byes. Supported his Bowlers and Fielders with fantastic glove work.
- Brendan Drury - One of our Opening Bowlers. Brendan led our attack for the entire regular Season. Whilst there wasn't a lot of wickets , Brendan always put the opposition batters under enormous pressure which gave the team momentum.
- James Pfundstein - Selected in the Team for his Batting. James showed throughout the Season a very solid technique as well as the ability to concentrate well throughout his Inning's
- Matthew Stanton - The other Opening bowler and did an outstanding job of not only bowling tightly but putting the opposition Batsmen under pressure. Matthew showed fantastic enthusiasm throughout the Season.
- Nathan Ellis - Selected in the Team as a genuine all rounder and that was exactly the role he played. 3rd aggregate wickets, 3rd aggregate runs plus some fantastic catches.
- Jamie Brown - Jamie's performance with the bat whereby he scored 195 runs at an average of 39 was far and away the best batting performance for the Team and in comparison to the Teams we played, including the eventual winners, the most dominant of any batter. He top scored in every game in the regular season.
- Jake Purser - Jake fitted into the Team extremely smoothly. Starting the Season as a middle order Batsman, Jake finished off as an Opener where he achieved his top score of 15. He also topped the Bowling average at 5.5 runs per wicket.
- Ryan Agar - Ryan was without doubt our number 1 bowler taking 11 wickets at 7.7 runs per wicket. His ability to come on and bowl his first ball right on the spot is a very rare skill putting batsmen under pressure from the start.
- Emmanuel Shewan - Another all rounder in the Team whose form with the ball was extremely solid and coming on at first change continued the relentless pressure built up from our Openers. As well as taking some very good catches in the Field.
- Hayden McLean - Another all rounder in the Team. Hayden bowled 3rd change and inevitable something seemed to happen when he came on to bowl. He finished the Season as the 2nd highest wicket taker and a fantastic average of 5.8 runs per wicket. Hayden also batted near the middle to top of the order
- Ben Letton - For a boy who didn't talk a lot he really displayed an enormous amount of 'fight' during the Season. He played some extremely important Innings for the Team. Was the 2nd highest run scorer overall. As Ben's confidence increases he should amass a lot of runs.
In conclusion I would like to also thank all the Parents who not only ensured the boys had the right attitude to the Season but also the way they chipped in to ensure the Season ran extremely smoothly. Special thanks also to our Manager, Kerrie Smith , whose organisation and communication skills were fantastic and made my role extremely easy.
Thanks everyone for a great Season... bring on 2006/07.

This season could probably be described as 'The one that got away". After being prominent in the DCA series for several seasons without taking a Shield, our aim at the start of this years' series was to go to that next level. Pre-series training was fantastic, with a batting line up that went all the way to Number 12, an embarrassment of riches in the bowling department, and a slick fielding outfit, all indications - a successful outcome.
The two trial matches against Bankstown and St. George proved we were on track with our preparation and left us in a positive frame of mind for the series proper.
Round One against Newcastle resulted in an easy win after dismissing Newcastle cheaply - 111 - thanks to outstanding bowling performances all round. We passed their total for the loss of only 2 wickets.
Round Two against Fairfield-Liverpool was again, an emphatic win, with Sutherland posting a formidable total of 8-260, courtesy of a masterly '126 by Steven Smith. Once again, our bowlers did the job, and sharing the wickets around we strangled Fair1ield's run chase seeing them finish their innings at 9-155.
Round Three saw us host Hawkesbury on a difficult Sutherland Oval wicket, however another fine team batting effort saw us reach a more than competitive score of 214. The Sutherland bowlers were on fire in this match, demolishing Hawkesbury's talented batting line up for just 99. The fielding in this match was simply outstanding.
Round Four saw us venture to Raby Oval to take on the undefeated Camden. In one of the best games of cricket I have seen in atrociously hot conditions, I was proud to be witness to the fantastic spirit in which both teams played the game. After batting first on a testing deck Sutherland accumulated a competitive - but by no means match winning score of 7/214. Following instances of batsmen and bowlers alike retiring from the match due to heat fatigue. the game finished at close to 7.00pm with Sutherland taking the last wicket in the last over of the day to win the match by just 10 runs.
Round Five was going to be a testing match against a very strong Blacktown side, and after the trying conditions of the week before I was concerned how our boys would approach the match. We were bundled out for our lowest score of the series - 144 - but the determination our boys showed was inspiring. In a never say die effort, Sutherland took Blacktown's last 3 wickets for just 6 runs, leaving us victorious by just 2 runs. An unbelievable performance which left us Minor Premier of our division.
The Semi Final against our nemesis Penrith was disappointing. After being bundled out for just 130, Penrith had no trouble hauling in our score for the loss of just 2 wickets. A sad way to end a special series.
Thanks very much to Helen Mall who was a great assistant and Manager of the team thanks also to the parents for their unstinting support and dedication - you should be proud of your boys. Finally, this side led by Steven Smith and his deputy Mitch Bowmer (who kept wickets beautifully), oozes class and talent - and a fair amount of humour I It was a pleasure and a privilege to have had the opportunity to Coach them in this their last season of Junior Cricket. I have known most of these boys for 8 years now, and look forward to watching their progress through their future Cricket careers with interest.

Round 1 v Illawarra After 30 overs we were 3-54 with a competitive score fast disappearing - in the end we managed 186. Good bowling was backed up with brilliant fielding and with spin introduced lIIawarra ended their innings on 58 in total chaos.
Round 2 v Penrith A great start. followed by a strong partnership. and aggressive batting kept us well on target to achieve a very competitive team score of 203 with all players providing strong contributions At the tea break Penrith were 6-68...after tea Penrith clawed their way back needing only 40 from the last ten overs. To their credit the players rallied in a great throw from fine leg their last batsman was out short of the crease.
Round 3 V South Eastern A steady start with the scoring rate accelerating saw 67 runs off the last ten overs. Our leggies did a great job taking four top order wickets between them to remove most of our opponent's firepower. The sustained commitment from our fieldsmen and the pressure they exerted on the opposition was the difference between the sides.
Round 4 V Canberra A great social weekend in Canberra enjoyed by all but unfortunately rain spoilt the cricket with it teeming down after 55 overs. We then sat through the lunch and tea breaks before calling it a day.
Round 5 V Camden Some well-timed hitting saw us reach a total of 245 - a just reward for a solid team effort. The boys were detennined and an early breakthrough put Camden on the back foot. A rain delay meant a reduced game and run rate to decide the winner. Our committed team effort in the field bundled them out for 117 to seal a convincing victory.
SEMI FINAL v Newcastle. After a good start Newcastle were in trouble at 218 and along with a committed fielding performance by all we restricted Newcastle to 122. We were soon in trouble with both openers dismissed for 7 runs and we appeared to be in all sorts of trouble at 5/62, but with sensible running and shot selection we added 51 for the sixth wicket in a match winning performance.
FINAL v South Eastern Unfortunately we did not play up to our usual high standard and were well beaten by South Eastern. The team fought hard but an under par effort in the field sealed our fate.
We played well during the main part of the season and the boys should be proud of their overall performance reflecting on their achievements not their disappointment at losing the final. I would like to thank all the boys for the way they behaved during the season as representatives of SSJCA. I would also like to thank Bob Manning and Peter Schofield for coaching this year. Finally to the parents, a huge thanks ,from the players and the management.

The SSJCA may feel proud of a fine team of boys whom so impressively represented our shire this past season in the Moore shield, on as well as off the cricket field .
Our season was launched with the grim news that our big quick Daniel Ward's bowling was ruled out for the season. If this wasn't enough his opening partner Daniel Saunders was reduced to medium pace from round one, culminating in him missing the last two games. To prove that our bowlers were not the only one's doing it tough Andrew Jones broke his arm prior to round five. Andrew Heme from the president's team and later Luke Hooper from lIIawong competently blended into the team. Thanks Boys.
Our trial games commenced with a comfortable win against Bankstown with three of our regulars out (emerging blue commitments) and a washed out match against G.R.P. St George.
Our official matches against Hornsby, Fairfield-Liverpool and Bankstown only exhibited the excellent fighting qualities of our side. .With two nail-biting wins against the former mentioned and a close loss against the latter saw very strong performances from our lads. Our tough draw saw possibly the two top guns in our competition. Newcastle & North Shore (formally Gordon) showing us why they are favourites. The Newcastle match saw a talented left handed batsman score a quick fire 50, with a back lift resembling a golf drive, and his name, Newton. Like father Jack, great hand to eye coordination. Talk about in the genes!
Whilst the above names only show stats (sadly as cricket can do) it does not exemplify the qualities of all the above mentioned, nor does it embody the excellent input from Bryce Daenell & Tom Aggett's newly representative shared wicket keeping duties, Andrew Heme, Andrew Jones & luke Hooper's tight "mediums" or Eric Schnyder's new found "Ieggies" nor does it illustrate Alec Judd's fine captaincy as the little general he is. I as coach could not ask for any more.
Now to the thanks. Firstly to the boys. Your hard work and determination has seen you all improve your skills. This, combined with a very good sporting approach to the opposition has honed you into a very fine team. I am very proud of you all.
Secondly to all the parents for their commitment, either sharing the scoring duties or organising the afternoon teas, second to none! Again the old war horse Harry Robbins for his vast experience and input and Brad Saunders our manager, again another great job Brad.
Thanks again to the association for their backing. From the grade club Evan Atkins' three appearances for wicket keeping skills was invaluable. Also to Matthew Hughston and Trent Woodhill (Sutherland's club coach), your contribution t6 the boys training sessions was greatly appreciated by all. Thanks again men.
