Retaining coaches and officials

For many clubs, recruitment is not the problem - it's keeping the coaches and officials coming back year after year that is the issue. Retention of your existing volunteers should be a priority for clubs.

The Australian Sports Commission has prepared the pdf's below. They contain a range of ideas and strategies to help clubs recognise and retain coaches and officials.

ECB Guide for Clubs

The English Cricket Board's publication A Guide To Managing A Successful Club (pdf 7megs) is available here in PDF format for you to download, save and print as necessary.

It will:

  • Help you run your club effectively
  • Provide you with a basic guide to various aspects of club life
  • Help you adopt a simple but professional approach to running your club
  • Provide you with ideas about the future of your club
  • Provide you with appropriate tools to support applications for funding

There is a lot of formal jargon and it is easy for things to appear over complicated when thinking about planning for the future, but the process is and should be fairly simple:

  • Where are you now?
  • Where do you want to be?
  • How are you going to get there?
  • How will you know where you are?

The Marketing Your Club (pdf 700k) resource for CDMs, county boards and recreational clubs is available here in PDF format.

User Friendly Sport

There are many steps that sport and recreation clubs can take to be more user-friendly to a wider range of people.

User Friendly sport - An ideas book to help sport and recreation clubs grow includes:

  • examples of how to keep existing members and attract new ones by drawing on the experience of other clubs
  • a model code of conduct for parents, players, spectators and coaches
  • tips on how to prevent unsporting behaviour

Keeping sport fun and safe - Codes of behaviour for user friendly junior sports clubs provides guidance on behaviour in junior sport settings.

The core principles of the codes of behaviour are that junior sport should:

  • be fun
  • be safe
  • be fair
  • 'belong' to juniors

Good Sports

How do sporting clubs change a culture of heavy drinking? Why do they want to?

The eleven-minute Good Sports Video asks members of sporting clubs to explain how they strengthen their club, their financial viability and their support in the community through implementing the Good Sports program.

The Good Sports Television Advertisements were run as a 15 second version across a number of states in 2004/2005 to increase public awareness of the Good Sports program.

Hot Weather Policy

The SSJCA does not have a HOT WEATHER POLICY; but we expect all Coaches and managers to take good care of all players at all times. In hot weather this would mean:

  • make sure all players are wearing a strong sun cream
  • make sure that all players are wearing a hat at all times
  • take a drink break every 45 minutes
  • have water available as needed at other times
  • rotate fielders off the field if possible
  • watch out for any signs of distress due to the heat and remove that player immediately.
  • be prepared to call all players off the field if several players are distressed.

Privacy Legislation

New national privacy legislation was introduced on the 21st December 2001 which provides a national scheme for the handling of "personal information" by the private sector.

The legislation is relevant to cricket Clubs and Associations in that it sets out requirements in relation to the collection, use, disclosure, quality, security and access to personal information.

Law firm Lander & Rogers, specialists in Sports Law, provide clubs/associations with an overview of the new privacy legislation and their obligations under the legislation.
